We had a similar "sticking" problem for a couple of years, the valves stuck every few weeks. They were 15/16 years old, in the end we replaced them all. We used Danfoss, cost about £9 each, OH fitted them himself.0

In a fit of overexcitedness I was feeling quite up for doing it, but not so optimistic anymore. I think I may ring around & just find out how much it would cost.

I get my supplies from Toolstation.
I've found they have decent TRV (Thermostatic Radiator Valves) for £4.98.
