Virgin Free Modem - is it worth it?

Options
Hi,
am having a guilt attack as after much deliberation have decided to sign up for broadband.
Got reeeally sick of trying to deal with dial up as it was so unbelievably slow (have tried several different networks)
- am planning a major career change and possibly a big move so decided that good internet access was necessary to look stuff up - work 9-6 so no places open for internet access by the time i get home.
its just alot of money for a big time slightly obsessive money saver like me (as an idea, i dont have a tv so dont have to pay license fee and only have radio so no cds dvds etc - slightly random examples but you get what i mean!)
17.99 a month - eek, heart pains and all that
Signed up to Virgin as they are offering free modem and connection at the moment and there is no contract.
do you think its worth it?
- and the big question i wanted to ask is - can i use the modem they give me to get a cheaper service later on?
sorry for the ramble!! :D
I've made my debts bite-size too depressing to look at all at once so am handling them one at a time - first up Graduate Loan £1720 paid off! only £280 to go!!!
Money to raise for tuition fees: £3000
When you get to the end of your rope, tie a knot and hang on!!

yes you can. I've just done the same thing. Saved me £60 for the broadband and a similar amount for the modem. Servioce has been great since it started, although I was anooyed that they said my account would be activateed on March 15th, but (having spent the evening trying in vain to connect and gone to bed in a huff) was actually activated at around 2am on March 16th!

I think it's an excellent offer. I might even switch to a cheaper provider soon, if I can find another with no annual contract (as we're still looking to move house!)

I have been given an activation date of tomorrow for VirginNet Broadband, sometime between 7.30am and 8.30pm. Will I have to wait until I get an email saying the line is activated, before I install the modem and filters etc? It's going to be a long day!!

no, you can install them anytime, if you are not connected at the exchange you will only get one light up on the modem at first, two lights meand your broadband is connected at the exhange. it's worth trying to connect once you get to lights as you may be activated but not had the email yet.

As a side issue, despite the email saying all was well I had to phone the helpdesk to get them to reset their end as it would not connect , gave it 10 minutes then up it came !!

I didn;t call the helpdesk as I refuse to pay 25p per minute

I too had an email promising activation between those hours, but when I went to bed at 11pm the account still wasn;t working - when I got up at 7am, all wasworking, and I'd had the activation mail arrive at 2am. hope your experience is better then mine was!

Well, my Broadband account was activated at about 2.30pm and everything went really smoothly - no problems at all!! It's so much faster, I just wish I'd done it sooner! VirginNet - recommended! :j
