Advice needed

Junior is effectively on a gap year, going to Uni in September.

One of the conditions of us supporting him was him getting a job, which he did, working about 40 hrs a week, and that he saved half his wages.

Anyway he's now talking about when he can resign - I jokingly said what about the week before he's due to go to Uni but admittedly I would like to go on one last family holiday and I appreciate that he has to get back into the swing of his subject as well as think about applying for jobs when he's at Uni

I know he's worked hard over the last 9 months or so - 7.30 starts and 9.00pm finishes have been the norm and that hasn't included the 40 minutes travel time so I don't want to appear too mean but at the same time, I don't want to be a pushover.

So what would be a reasonable end date for me to suggest?

beginning of August? It gives you all a month of family time with him not working, before he goes to uni.

Mid to late August. Depending on when his term starts obviously. He'll be glad of the extra money by the time he gets to uni.

Id say beg to mid august? Sounds like hes been working really hard and would deserve a nice break before uni.

There arent many other times he'll get that opportunity before what - retiring unless he goes travelling or something in later life? So if you can afford to, Id let him have a good few weeks off!

Or - could he ask to work part time say up to end of August and then have 4 full weeks off before uni?

Mid July for a few weeks off at least, the last two weeks or so before university will be spent buying all sorts of essentials and packing (not exactly a holiday).

If he hadn't taken a gap year, would you have insisted he get a summer job from the minute he finished his A levels until the week before university working 40 hours a week? Probably not, so give the poor boy a few weeks off.

Although further to my above post, I'd let him off now to be honest, especially if you want him to go on a last family holiday with you too. If he's taken a gap year then his mates will have all summer off, let him have a bit of time with them.

Two weeks to pack?! He's going to university at 19, not downsizing from his Hoarders-level house at 93.

I'd think about 3 weeks before he's due to start at university will give him the chance of a bit of a break and to do some preliminary reading.

If he stops working any earlier he's going to make serious inroads into his savings.

I remember I took ages to get together all the stuff I needed and most of it all for the first time (plates, crockery, bedding, clothes horse, books, towels, alcohol etc etc) and took a carload the first time with my mum bringing up everything I couldn't or forgot a few weeks later, although I hate packing so spread it out as much as possible, took me about a month to pack up my last flat.

Its not just the packing its also going out and buying all the stuff you need, it does take a while.

It really, really doesn't. It took all of us one day. There's no reason at all for it to take weeks and weeks.
