Yes I agree but you get a commentary and find out all sorts of information from the guides. You don't get this on the subway or the bus and for most of the time on the subway you are underground.

The subway/buses are convenient but passing by all these great buildings and parks and not knowing what they are or the history is not as informative as being on a tour bus

Completely agree with you. The on off bus tours are invaluable as you can see so much from the top of the bus along with the commentary. We have had some excellent guides on these buses and they are extremely knowledgeable.

You will walk miles so make sure that you have comfy shoes

Also a city transport pass will let you use buses as well as the subway and often take about the same length of time and you get to see lots of things on the way

Try to make time for meals and build them in to your day. After three days I had a revolt and refused to move unless I was promised a sit down meal with metal cutlery and ceramic plates. Its so easy to keep going and grab meals on the run but you should try the diners as well as restaurants

I am really enjoying all your tips, they are going to be really handy. I will use the hop on/off tourist buses because I have enjoyed them so much in other places like Malta and even London (only a one off too expensive otherwise).

Go to Brooklyn. It's fab. We walked our legs off in new york. As somebody mentioned earlier take very comfortable shoes.

There are some really cool places to visit in Queen's, a bit off the beaten track. PS1 is a great gallery and there is an outdoor amazing graffiti space too called 5 Pointz.

Oh, and the Bronx Zoo is fun too.
