Avoid making eye contact with the "comedy club" ticket sellers around Times Square, show any flicker of recognition/politeness + they won't give up.
Use the subway rather than taxis, traffic doesn't exactly flow in NYC. Also walk, you see much more + it's free!
Try to see the less obviously touristy areas, go to Brooklyn for example.
See a show on/off Broadway, you can queue for the cheap tickets at the booths on Times Square. I don't really like musicals, but really enjoyed Wicked at the Gerschwin Theatre.
Macy's +Bloomingdales aren't that exciting
Take the Staten Island Ferry, it's free + offers great views of the Statue of Liberty + the NY skyline.
Try not to eat around Times Square, the food is over priced + not particularly good quality either.
Take a stroll around Central Park for a welcome breath of fresh air.
Don't get conned by dodgy taxi drivers @ JFK, take the train into town (much cheaper)
Hope this helps..0 -

That would be my main tip. Make sure you avoid the ones who are not real taxi drivers and lie and tell you the taxis 'dont go to manhattan at that time' and they can give you a lift - include wearing fake name badges..
Get a real taxi- and yes you will probably have to queue for all of 5 minutes. Or, save yourself from their incredibly scary driving and get the train/subway!0 -
Avoid the place. Worth a stop off en route to/from somewhere else but not as a trip in itself.0
