What cutlery can I take in cabin luggage?

I've been "told off" last year for having a small table knife (ironically a British Airways one that I found in a charity shop!) when going through boarding security for Ryanair. They let me keep it but warned me not to take it again.
We don't take check-in bags, but do self-cater a little rather than buy ALL our meals out, so I take bowls, plates and spoons etc. I also need just one knife, for cutting cheese/spreading on bread etc. Is plastic okay or will that flag up as unacceptable too?
I have now bought some polycarbon cutlery, which looks like semi-transparent black plastic, but I'm not sure whether the knife would be allowed as I don't know what polycarbon is made of.
Could any seasoned travellers advise me. Is it just a blanket NO on any sort of knife in cabin baggage? If so I suppose I'll have to manage with just a spoon.

You should read your airlines website for forbidden items.
I would NOT take any knife like cutlery at all. It is just asking for trouble.
Are you going somewhere that you cannot buy plastic cutlery?0 -
Going to Ireland, but the far West where the shops are pretty basic and old-fashioned. Good suggestion though, will probably seek out a small pack of cheap disposable knives when I get there.
Thanks for replying so quickly.I haven't bogged off yet, and I ain't no babe

If you're in a hotel etc. ask them if you can borrow one, or just do it and return it at the end of the holiday0

Where are you flying to?
Flying to Shannon but driving from there over to a tiny place called Spanish Point, which has no shops at all that I know of. Nearest "town" is Miltown Malbay, which is like something out of a film set in the 30s! I think there is a Londis there, and a small hardware store so we might be in luck.
Otherwise what a good idea to "borrow" one from breakfast (which is included in our hotel price so a definite possibility!).I haven't bogged off yet, and I ain't no babe

get plastic cutlery from a shop once through security? I'm surprised they let you keep the knife, tweezers aren't even allowed!0

Stop off in Shannon to buy them? My parents go out that way from Knock, and last time they bought a quilt en route!0 -
On average, I take around 25 flights each year and always have one of these in my bag:
It's called a Spork and you can get them for about £2 from many camping shops or from Amazon and many other online retailers.
It's a spoon fork and knife combined (the knife isn't very sharp), and my one has been seen in many bag searches and has never caused any problems.0
