bare metal, is that something more technical than it sounds?
I have method in my madness in reducing my operating costs

Painted metal on the inside - unadorned with plastics/upholstery to reduce costs.

Have you tried the toyota IQ? Has a more quality and premium feel than the german stuff, and you can buy a 2 year old model with all the extras for a good saving. The 1.33 is the one to go for, very nippy in 2nd, only slightly less MPG than the 1.0, but the 1.0 is hard work on motorways.

If your looking to cut costs why on earth are you looking at new cars?

This is why we prefer new cars:

Almost a third of second-hand vehicles on offer are stolen or have been written off, or otherwise have been bought with loans that are still outstanding, according to the research.
In all, a staggering 88 per cent of used cars were were found to have some form of hidden history which could affect their current and future value.

Those figures seem to be on the high side to me

I have been to look at these 2 cars today, plus a polo. Does anyone have any suggestions or ideas about the UP or the citigo, I realise they are going to both be premium prices as they are new models. I would like to downgrade from my golf, trying to cut my cuts etc.

With a family member, we've now had test drives on the Up! and Citigo. We've ordered a Citigo in the Elegance 60 spec (spring green metallic/ivory trim). The greentech bits come as standard and the VW equivalent was £1000 more (but did have the 75 version of the engine, which we weren't bothered about).

Coincidentally there's a group test of the three variants in this week's Auto Express, and the citigo elegance wins it.

Like photome I'd be surprised if the real figures were as high as this - please provide some reference for where this data is from. I would genuinely be interested to find out if this really is a true reflection of the car market.

How risky a used purchase is will also surely depend on where a car is bought from. I would certainly expect there to be a big difference in statistics like above for a car bought from a main dealer with a FSH compared to something bought from a local private seller.
thank you for the helpful advice, there would be many reasons buying a newer car would be a way to cut costs, not least the possibility of incurring repair charges and the reliability of a newer car.

There are plenty of reasons lots of people prefer to buy new cars, but FWIW I really don't think that from a purely financial point of view it makes sense. I do of course though want people to keep buyng new cars so there are decent 2nd hand ones for me to buy!

New cars are not guaranteed to be more reliable - I've certainly known some people with new cars to have lots of hassle with faults. Although obviously the cost of getting them fixed was covered by the dealer. When considering the cost of repairs, from a purely financial point of view what needs to be considered is how these possible costs compare to the guaranteed depreciation in value of a new car. The AA suggest a typical depreciation of 40% in the first year of owning a new car - so on even an £8k car that is £3200 which would cover some pretty hefty repair costs on a used car! This sort of figure should also be born in mind when looking at what you'd get for selling your current Golf.

Google takes you to a Daily Mail article ('nuff said), which is based on a press release from Experian Autocheck.

So, basically, it's an advertising scare story to get people to use an HPI-type service.
