Insured to drive Minibus on Car Insurance?

Hi all,

Have tried a search for this but no luck, just wondering if standard car insurance that allows you to drive other cars (3rd party cover) also allows you to drive a minibus of say up to 16 passengers? We will be ringing our insurer up later but just thought I'd see if anyone else has any knowledge on it first?

I have had a quick Google search and have seen a few comments along the lines of as long as it is for social, domestic or pleasure you don't need specialist insurance, which is what ours would be, but just wanted your thoughts.

Thanks!!

Not normally, Specifially cars are only covered on most. Even small car derived vans are usually excluded..

My current insurance with Aviva states the third party cover includes vans up to a certain weight. A few years back a different insurer told me by phone I was covered for small vans. Check with your insurer to be certain.
I would also check if your driving license allows you to drive this minibus.

Yes it would be for free - it is just to transport a group of people to an event as a one-off, not a regular occurence.

might sound daft but remember they will be in your care
i would make them sign a form agreeing that to the best of your ability you will get them there safely and they all must wear the belts (its the law now anyway)
litigation is the killer of being decent these days

Make sure you have category 'D1' on your driving licence. (unless it is an older paper one with group 'A')

OP should be ok on a car licence, subject to http://www.direct.gov.uk/en/Motoring/DriverLicensing/WhatCanYouDriveAndYourObligations/DG_4022619

Where is the minibus coming from? I would have thought that the owners would insist on fully comp cover rather than just 3rd party.
