can some kind person on here answer my question please. Neighbours having an extension and the builders start at 8am with the hammering, drilling and also put on their loud radio. Is this time to start acceptable by law? thanks anyone

    There are no laws.

And it's only for a short time isn't it? Otherwise nothing would get done

Talk to them nicely and explain why its an issue for you?
Quicker they get done the quicker they are off site and life is back to normal

8am is 'usual' start time for many trades so it must be classed as acceptable I would have thought.

Annoying for some though, especially night shift workers.

When we had some building work done, we were told that the start time was 8am and that the builders were not allowed to make noise before that.

Ask them, via the neighbours if you get on ok, politely if they wouldn't mind keeping the radio low until about 9:00.

Other than that there is little or nothing you can do. Building is noisy work but it won't go on for ever.

Maybe bribe the builders with cups of tea when you ask.

Builders start at 8am or just after on my (current extension).
They don't have a radio on and don't use any machinery before 9am.

I believe Bin lorries are allowed to collect from 7am so I'd assume that is the "accepted" noise allowance start time?

I certainly wouldn't allow them to start before 8am but i'd consider 8am a fairly normal time for people to be up / going to work on a week day.

If you work shifts I would have some sympathy other than that i don't see how 8am is out of the norm for a working household?

Is this because it is school holidays?

Edit:- If you were my neighbour and asked about them keeping the radio off / low until 9am I'd consider that to be a reasonable request.
  • I would just sit tight, it won't go on forever

General recommendations from most councils is 8am - 6pm Monday to Friday, 8am - 1pm Saturdays and nothing on Sundays/Bank Holidays. These are guidelines for noisy work, but they can still be onsite outside of those times if what they are doing is quiet, ie painting.

There's no law regarding working hours of builders, but if they were consistenting starting noisy work BEFORE 8am you possibly have a valid complaint.

Why do builders have to have radios blaring? Pig ignorant of them to subject others to their taste in music, particularly when they could use one of those stick-in-your-ear gadgets and bother no-one.

because it would be dangerous to be on a construction site without being fully aware of what is going on around you, same reason as why you don't wear them while driving or cycling. wearing earphones would limit what you can hear quite severely.
