It's almost impossible to say because of the number of things that can affect their life. I've had cars at well over 150k miles still on original disks all round, a lot of moderns seem to struggle to get 50k on a set....

The easiest way to judge that is comparing the (usually unworn) outer edge or centre of the disk to the bit the pads rub on. If there's a significant step (as a very rough guide maybe 1/4 of the disk thickenss adding the wear on back and front faces for solid disks, less for vented) between the two then they're due changing.

    Thanks for a helpful post.

Just curious that's all. There are no problems with brake performance and I have never had a car old enough enough to need the discs replacing.

At it's last service I was advised the fronts needed doing around now but was silent on the rears. I have asked for them to be checked /done at the same time.:)

Nah, don't bother to repair your motor so that it can actually stop in the shortest possible distance and just rely on my rear bumper to slow you down when you press your pedal to the metal and next to !!!!!! all happens.

Seriously, what is it with people and penny pinching over safety issues ?

    What a pathetic rant.

The OP has slightly pitted discs, which is what most probably the vast majority of vehicles on the road has, other than brand new cars or those who have had new discs fitted recently.

I was informed 30k ago my discs were slightly pitted and I've had 2 MOT'S since and my brakes work just fine even now, I even had a free brake check just last week.

The OP isn't irresponsible, you just sound like a bit of a mug.

A slightly pitted rear brake disk is hardly a major safety concern.

well ive just looked at a house and theres a hairline crack of the 100 year old bricks 8 inches long under the eaves

do you recommend a full rebuild of the wall?

You'll need to rebuild the opposite one as well - never do one side on its own*!

    * that's good advice for brake work, but no more sensible for wall building than blanket "it's safety, replace the lot regardless of need" statements are for brakes ;)

Can I just ask is it better to go with 'the better quality' brake pads?

Not necessarily. Any from recognised makers (Ferrodo / Mintex / Brembo / Bendix etc) will be fine and many of the budget brands are as well - but best to stay clear of them unless you're confident at what you're getting.

Budgets supplied by a decent factors / garage rather than EBay or a market stall will normally be up to scratch whatever it says on the box cos they can't afford the comeback of people killing themselves ;)

No problem. There is one slight caveat to my last, btw, I'm assuming ou don't drive round everywhere like Sterling Moth late-braking into corners and generally beating the *&!# out of your brakes?

If you do then "quality" pads might be worth it to reduce fade when they're hot but looking at your previous posts that doesn't seem to be our style ;)
