if you can book your tickets 3 months in advance you can do the journey by train at the weekend for £16 return (this is from trainline so it will probably be cheaper on the train provider's own website). A railcard (if you're eligible) will reduce this price even further.

can you get a full refund if they fall out though?

OP, are you eligble for any railcard?
    Aged under 26 perhaps?
    Or a full time student?

If so get a 16-25 railcard and save a third of the ticket price.
So your £21 return trip drops to £14.
You only need to do four trips a year to start making a saving.
A yearly card costs £28, but a railcard valid for three years only costs £65.

    This.

And an online voucher takes that down to £25.
And using Tesco Clubcard deals that drops to £14. :D

Get on your bike, it's approx 65 miles so after a few months you should manage it in around 4 hours.

Thanks for the recent suggestions, no not eligible for young person's railcard, but I think I might be for one of the other railcards where you pay £28 and get a discount off tickets, I need to look into that.

Also Tesco voucher swap is also a good idea to be used in combination.

There have been some unusual and creative suggestions here too, travelling 4hrs by bike isn't an option unless you are in training for a cycling event!

If anything else that is practical comes to mind please let me know.
    Thanks
