Hi, I am going to swap my internet and phone provider to Talk Talk 3. They are offering their own 'high tech' Talk Talk dedicated modem for £29.99.
Is there any real reason to puchase their modem or can I use my existing modem. ?

A router is better than any modem, but you should be able to use any modem with TT.Ever get the feeling you are wasting your time? :rolleyes:0

Sounds rather expensive for just a modem. Routers are priced from around £35 and offer much better protection.0

I used my existing router when I changed to TT with no problems, just had to set it up manually. The only reason you need one of their modem/routers is if you need to contact their technical support.
You don't have to buy the modem/router from TT, dsldepot.co.uk sell refurbed ones very cheaply with a 30 day warranty. Have purchased a couple of wireless routers from them in the past for other people with no problems. Got a thomson 580 wireless router from them last week for £19 inclusive of postage.
Other TT users who use their own modem/routers have got a cheap thomson speedtouch 330 over the net in case they needed to contact technical support.0 -

Thanks for that. Sorry but I know very little about computers, could you just clarify for me. I have a DELL with an internal modem.
Can I use the existing internal modem to connect to Talk Talk with out any problem ?
From what you say, if I then buy a Thompson 330 speedtouch modem to use to contact Talk Talk technical, do I have to disable the internal computer modem to use the speed touch modem or is the whole process self sorting so to speak ?
Thanks for your time.0 -
The internal modem will just be a 56k dial-up modem. You need an ADSL stand alone modem, or router with an inbuilt ADSL modem as has been mentioned for broadband.ac's lovechild0

As Albertross has posted, router is better than modem. Does your dell have an RJ45 outlet (looks the same as telephone jack point but slightly bigger), If it has I would get a router and use an Ethernet (patch) cable to connect. Better than using a USB cable.
I do believe that one of the early Netgear routers does not work with TT, I'm not sure but they might have this particular model listed on their website. I'm using a Thomson Speedtouch 580 wireless router with no problems. The desktop is connected using the Ethernet cable and the laptop (an old dell) is connected wireless. Setup was easy using the setup wizard.
I had to diable the dial up modem settings on mine. Did this under the Network and Dialup Connection settings.
You don't say which Dell computer you have or what make of modem.
You can order the Connect and Go setup up disk from the TT website if you buy a speedtouch 330 from another oulet. Which is what I did, I was not charged for the disk.

Hello there,
This is standard TT practice. However, my son who is quite knowledgeable on these matters says it is not necessary to purchase their modem but may be used as an excuse if you have problems with your broadband and they can't resolve the problem.
Perhaps, if you already have a modem try it out with your broadband and take it from there.
Good luck

My son said exactly the same, so I am going to wait until we are activated and see what happens. He works in computers and can usually talk me through most problems over the phone0 -

Its not a question of that they may use it as an excuse, they will use it as an excuse, if you don't have the same type of modem that they sell. Thats why users of other forums recommend that you buy the speed touch 330 from Ebay or some other source as a backup in case you have to contact technical support.0 -
Are you mad ?!!! TalkTalk make you pay for several months, before they finally give you broadband (that's if you ever get it). They give you an 'estimated' go live date. Take that date with a pince of salt. That date passes and you don't even get you modem or starter pack by then. I'm still waiting for mine (or course, they're still taking the money from my bank).
Steer well clear of TalkTalk and Carphone Warehouse. In my opinion Limited Company thieves. The most dishonest company I have ever dealt with. Every time you have a conversation with them, they just give you a lie, and delay you a few more weeks, and then a few more weeks. Meanwhile, they're coining it in.0
