That's a real shame, because the correct answer here is not to find another bank, but to bring the coins - unsorted and uncounted - to this woman when she's at the cashier window and make her count them all and pay in to your lad's account.

Honestly there is no point, she'll just refuse, especially as the bank state they should already be sorted in bags.

The only thing that I can suggest is that your brother saves his coins in a smaller container and you visit the bank more often. Very annoying, I know.

I hate the fact that you can't pay in large amounts of change to the bank. We give our change to our son to save for things and it's a real pain getting rid of the stuff. The bank won't take more than two or three bags at a time but who wants to spend half an hour queuing in the bank to pay in £3?:mad:

    As for Coinstar.............:mad::mad::mad:

I'd have had to ask her what the stupid coin deposit machine was for if its not for people to deposit coins in! Maybe it works better with pound coins!

Reminds me of a scene I saw in a film once...

Young boy to shopkeeper: 'How much are your penny sweets?'
    Shopkeeper: "Two pee!"

Any time I've paid bags of coins in, despite me counting them beforehand, the cashier has emptied the bags and counted them again.

I've seen some banks accept and then charge for counting it also.

They've got those weighing machines for this now. Maybe the teller thinks you look shifty? ;)

as an update to this - i transferred the money to two smaller tubs, went back into the branch (as i had to nip back into stockport with her indoors) and put the coins in regardless (i walked in with them in my bag).

i then asked to speak to the branch manager who said she was behind the woman i spoke to. apparently the machine was awaiting a part which has now been fixed and it can start accepting large amounts of coinage again. the suggestion of going to coin star was apparently a helpful suggestion because she thought i might have needed the money then and there.

i know i sometimes look like a bit of a scruff, but i didn't think it was that bad.

anyway, i gave the manager an ear bashing and told her that we've opened my brother an account at HSBC (i haven't) and will be moving his banking affairs there shortly (we won't).

i'd have liked a therapeutic shout, but it didn't come to it

it's bought not brought (i just bought my chicken a suit from that new shop for £6.34)
  • Why store it the container, bag it and drop it in every week. Under the mattress it gains no interest, in the bank, it does. And if the average balance is about £20, the that is a bar of chocolate free every year.

It's just the way he likes to save his money. It's more convenient to take it every 2-3 weeks rather than every week.

He'll set himself challenges to reach certain markings on the tub in X number of days (doesn't matter if it's pennies or pounds, just so long as it's up to a certain level in the tub). Then sets further goals for the remainder of the tub. Once it's full or if work's slow (I.e. the neighbour's grandson walks their dog), we'll empty it and start again.

To echo what someone else has said, he never asks for anything. He's 13 and if there's something he wants (so far an Xbox 360 & games, iPhone (albeit 2nd hand) and he got himself a brand new iPad 2 before Xmas), he saves every penny he earns and banks it. He's learning the concept of interest aswell and his statements are showing him how it's beneficial to have his money in the bank and not under the mattress.

His next goal is a PS3. What I've not told him is that he's saved up enough for nearly 3 of them since December.

I have to say, I would have gone nuts at that statement. How cheeky and rude to make assumptions about someones dress and financial state there and then.
