can't use coin deposit machine because it keeps getting blocked with coins

Options
my little brother saves up like mad to buy things he wants. he managed an ipad just before christmas and is now on the trail for a ps3.

he gets small amounts of money for doing odd jobs around the house, for walking the neighbour's dog and other bits & bobs.

he saves it all in a sealed tub (inspired by me and the sealed tub challenge on this very forum) and when it gets near full, i take him to the bank and we stick the cash in the coin deposit machine (he's got a kids account with natwest).

this has never been a problem until this morning.

we went yesterday and the machine was out of action. it's always hit & miss, so we went for some breakfast and went home.

we walk into the branch this morning and see the machine in full working order. striding up to the machine, the brother gets his card ready and i whip out the tub from my bag.

now, this isn't a MASSIVE tub - it's just a cleaned out peanut butter tub (albeit a 1kg peanut butter tub). i know that the machine is a bit flimsy, so we always tip the money in in 2 or 3 transactions because if you put too much in, it spits it out and the machine goes out of order. the staff know us there and the woman who works as a greeter knows me fairly well.

as we're approaching the machine, said woman stops us and tells us we're not allowed to use the machine because 'people like you' keep putting coins in it and blocking it, before being advised to go and use the coinstar machines in asda. she explained that the machine has been offline for the past 3 days because of people using it to deposit coins (imagine that..a coin deposit machine being used to deposit coins. what kind of sick mind would do that?).
apart from the fact that for 2 of the previous 3 days the bank has been shut, what kind of advice is that? 'go and put your money elsewhere'.

now i know we could count the coins and take them in in bags, but my brother has a few 'educational needs' and a manifestation of such is that he gets anxious in crowded places. anyone who has been into stockport great underbank will know that it can get very busy, so he tends not to like to have to queue up. i'd take the money in for him, but he likes to come with and have the feeling of independence of banking his own money.

are there any other banks that have free coin deposit machines? i know HSBC have them, but our 2 local branches are devoid of such facilities.

but what a ridiculous notion - a coin deposit machine being blocked up by coins. what next? an ATM getting confused by maths?

that is absolutely rediculous!!!! i hope you complained to the branch manager about the member of staffs attitude. the problem with coinstar is that they charge rediculous amounts for the pleasure.

Write and complain to the manager. The staff obviously need to be reminded "people like you" are the customers.

I'd have had to ask her what the stupid coin deposit machine was for if its not for people to deposit coins in! Maybe it works better with pound coins!

She said it's for depositing 'a few quid to pay bills'.

Admire your younger brother for saving and doing odd jobs I wish more kids were like that rather than expect things from parents on a whim, good on him he may go far

That's a real shame, because the correct answer here is not to find another bank, but to bring the coins - unsorted and uncounted - to this woman when she's at the cashier window and make her count them all and pay in to your lad's account.

Only thing to do is to check each branch in your local area - no one can suggest a specific branch because as you've already said, HSBC do them but not in your local. Good luck - and be sure to write in a letter of complaint.

I would have immediately turned to the counter and said "I wish to put in a deposit" and tipped the coins onto the counter for said woman to count.
