Have only ever heard bad things about 1&1 - have experienced extremely poor customer service myself.
that would explain why they don't want to let you know who their customers are. Every other shopping cart I know of has a portfolio section to show off the webstores that use their service. And website owners are normally happy to have an extra link to their site.

I'd recommend Mediatemple. Slightly more expensive that some of the hosts mention above, though the service is untouchable and their product is fantastic. Check their client list out.0

iPage is really slow I switched to hostgator and everything sped right up.
