Urban MPG and saving a few pennies!

First of all - hello all, have been browsing this website for years and only just plucked up the courage to post!

Secondly (!) - Are there any good web links out there for sites that give a reliable urban MPG for each car model? Have tried a google and got bogged down! I'm not convinced my current car (1.8 petrol Focus Zetec 53 plate) is giving me the best value for money for what it is now used for - a regular 20 miles a day on a 30mph A road, and I'm looking for a site that will let me compare urban MPG with some other makes/models?

My partner and I have just got our first house together, and so I have been looking to see where I can pinch pennies in every aspect of our lives! Whilst my car is sound and working, the MOT is due next month and I was wondering if with 12 months on it it might be a viable time to look to sell it and find something a bit more suited to that urban drive (when I researched this car a few years back I was doing a lot of motorway commuting) that saves me even a few pennies on a weekly basis - it all helps in the long run!

For 20 miles a day I would stick with what you have. All you will ever do is spend more money on a new(er) car which may save just £1 a week.

There is also www.spiritmonitor.de. It is a German site but it has an option to see the info in English.

Bear in mind what it might cost you to change your existing car for a more economical replacement. It won't save you money if you have to find another few hundred or thousands of pounds just to save some oney on the fuel costs of your existing car.

We bought a C3, costs about 10p a mile in diesel. So that'll save about £500 a year even on 20 miles a day, 5 days a week, 50 week a year in your present car. We do 15,000 a year in it, so for us, it's a £1500 saving though.

Be aware that even a £500 saving like Mikey is describing will be more than offset by the depreciation on a newer car

We also saved £100 a year on tax.

Huge thanks for the replies guys. I should have put a bit more in the first post perhaps, was cooking dinner and multitasking!
The focus is coming up for 80k, and whilst still working (and has never had a day "off sick") I am also thinking of planning ahead for perhaps when it might not! I also don't buy new cars or take out HP or similar, I'd be hoping to get around 1k back on my current car, and spend no more than 3 on a newer one.
I would guesstimate I do around 10k a year, based on that basic 7 day a week 20.4 mile round trip plus the odd longer journey, so not a vast amount.

But many thanks again for your links, it gives me some food for thought and chance to do some at least hypothetical car shopping!

But what are car you comparing the diesel costs against?
