Sorry, because of his age I assumed he was studying a degree level qualification which would have funding with it. As he obviously isn't, what were his plans for paying his way through college doing a lower level course at his age?
I'm only at uni now (30) I spent 4 years as college (2 different ones) but I did work part-time, though never gave my parents any money. Fortunately my parents didn't need it.
Anyways. I agree with others, get him on a course to help him with his problems.0 -

Obviously there are many young people of this age in FE but it's unusual and very selfish for someone to expect to be supported in it by a single parent on a limited income!0 -
Does he want to do something about his reading and writing?
If so, I agree he should contact your local college. He should be able to access free courses of he doesn't have GCSEs but he may not be able to carry on his JSA claim. He'd need to ask about funding too.
The Dyspraxia Foundation is a very good start if he suspects he has that - we've had brilliant support from our local group.
Are you absolutely sure he has lost jobs because he can't read/write? I'm wondering how he got those jobs in the first place if he is unable to complete an application form...?
I don't want to call him a liar but is it possibly there is other reasons for him being dismissed and he is looking for excuses?
Either way, it seems sensible to contact local colleges and see what help they can offer.
He needs to go via his GP for a dyspraxia assessment, as said, and that could be long-winded. Even of diagnosed though, he'd still need to find a way of improving is literacy skills.0 -
He needs to do something about his reading and writing. I am horrified his illiteracy has gone unaided for this long! (and will he able able to read the help threads if he can't read, OP?
)
I think there may be some online sites that will help with reading, maybe look around for some books to help with writing if he feels too nervous to do a course at college?
In this day and age nobody is going to get anywhere without a good level of literacy. Get him to the docs for a dyslexia/dyspraxia test - the two are often linked. Good luck!
