Click Start. Type services.msc in the search box and click it in the programs category. Scroll down to find Windows Update (almost at the bottom) and check that the status shows "Started" and the startup type is Automatic (Delayed Start)

If it is already started, there is an automated Microsoft fixit available here

Nothing is showing in "View update history"

Should I do a system restore?

    Thanks,

Yes, says "started", gives the option to "stop" or "restart".

I restarted before with no success, will try it again.

No success, stopped it and restarted, will now restart computer.

    Go to this folder

    c:\windows\softwaredistribution\datastore\logs\

    rename edb.log as edb.old

then attempt to run Windows update again

(Note: You should be able to rename this file without issue, but if renaming it fails to it being in use, try stopping the Windows Update service first, or start the computer in safe mode then rename it.
