Plus I'm not entirely sure that that's right by the buyer - asking him to negate any protection they have in order to lessen the risk for the seller just makes you look shady, doesn't really alter buyer protection, and also puts the risk on the shoulders of the person who is not ultimately responsible for the transaction, that is, the buyer, which is unethical given the balance of power in a transaction is with the seller and buyer protection policies actively bring that power back over to the side of the person handing over the money.

I would run a mile from any seller who suggested an unorthoodox method of payment - or ordered me to use one - solely to protect themselves, and any serious buyer would do so as well.

There are always two parties to the transaction. You cannot hope to sell successfully online by goldplating your own protection at the expense of that of the person paying the money over.

Well its just a suggestion, obviously trust has to play a part. But as we all know we can be scammed by buyers who claim things are broken or not received etc. I have bought and sold using this method without issue and would never "order" anyone to pay this way, but of course there is a risk and I would never do it for amounts that I could not afford to lose.

And buyers can lose money to sellers whose items never turn up.

It happens both ways. I've just had an INR on a book from the US which didn't turn up for six weeks. For £5 I was happy to wait. If I'd spent £500, however, I'd be pretty upset if someone on a message board was insinuating that I was a scammer and therefore they should not refund or ask for payment in a way that meant they got to keep my money unless I tried to find a way to sue them.

It's a question of proportion, but the balance of responsibilities and risks lie with the seller, and should do, since the buyer who is handing over money - quite a lot of money in this case - is not in any control of of what the seller sends or even if the seller sends it.

Yes, there are scams on the buyer's part, but that is not a reason for depriving them of protection that is rightfully theirs.

If you can't trust buyers enough to get them to trust you, then don't sell online. There are plenty of face-to-face venues where you can hand over item and receive money without too much hassle or mistrust. If you want to get online sort of prices for items, then you need to take online sort of risks to get it.

Any seller who suggested a PayPal gift payment to me would be considered a scammer .

A PayPal gift payment is just that, it is designed to be used to send money as a gift to friends or relatives, it is not designed to be used to pay for goods. With PayPal being a bit tempremental about being misused I would suggest that any seller making a habit of doing this would soon lose their PayPal account.
