Sorry to sound a bit slow people, but what exactly is meant by "resetting the NCD 'clock'" ?

I took "clock" to mean the relevant date the policy ended on the NCD proof document.

I used it to mean the last date on which an insurance company honoured an existing NCD, and confirmed that entitlement in a form that would then in turn be recognised by another insurance company.

Some companies insist on seeing a paper confirmation of NCD, usually in the form of a renewal quotation, others seem able to confirm an NCD's existence from some central register.
The unknown question seems to be how long a period of insurance has to be for the NCD to appear on the register.

I have never been asked for proof of NCD when switching companies - perhaps someone can explain exactly how this works.

Some insurers don't ask for proof at inception, though if they don't will point out they may require to see it in the future.

There is no "register" of NCD.

'If you have a car, then you could insure it, then cancel within the cooling off period, you would then get an up to date NCD statement when you cancel.'

Brilliant! I wonder would it work though.
These insurance companies are a complete law unto themselves. I was working abroad for four years and struggled to get affordable insurance when I returned as they required proof of claims from the overseas insurance company which I was able to get eventually. I was then granted my proper NCD. I suppose I was just lucky and determined! I can only assume that different insurance companies have different rules??

That's what I had always been told. But the fact is no insurer in 45 years of motoring has ever asked me for proof of NCD, so it would appear that each new insurer manages to get the information from the previous one.
Or else they just don't care, and can't be bothered finding out whether I am entitled or not. :)

You just been fortunate, and not had to send it in.

But many do request it, and some are quick to amend the premium or cancel if it's not forthcoming (as lots of posters on this forum have reported)
