Car Insurance - Time lapsed NCD

Hello MS Experts,

I hope I have placed my question in the appropriate forum; if not I apologise to the Mods for my ignorance.

I have 20+ years of No Claims Bonus but haven't had a dedicated policy on my own car for almost 2 years: it hasn't been necessary, I've been a named driver on two other vehicles and have a continous motorcycle policy too.

I've now been told that the car insurance industry will lapse [ergo. 'erase'] my entire No Claims Bonus history if I've not bought a dedicated policy for my own car in the last 2 years!
Seems incredible but might it be true please?

Also, if this is the case and I don't need to insure my car at the moment, is there anything I can do to ensure I do not lose my NCD - perhaps there should be something I'm doing , saying or buying that'll save my existing insurance history?

Many thanks to all who offer advice and help on this......

CIS take NCD up to 3 years old, Aviva did but I am not sure if they do any longer.

Dependant on your situation you could always buy a £100 car and insure that, although obviously you would need to work out whether the cost of insuring this would exceed the savings given by the NCD loss.

Basically I am not that much expert in this case, as I have never come across such a situation. The other thing is that the person has no options but to suggest you for the other insurance company. The thing which is under doubt is the No Claim Bonus which you have earned as a reputed driver. An insurance company cannot lapse such type of bonus just like that.

They can and do! A period of 2 years is the normal period before they will no longer accept "old" NCD.

If you have a car, then you could insure it, then cancel within the cooling off period, you would then get an up to date NCD statement when you cancel.

Or, if you have an insureable interest in the cars you are a named driver for, then you could alternate insuring one with the current policyholder, thereby always having NCD no more than one year old.
  • Thanks for the replies, especially to Quentin for the creative way of keeping the NCD!

It appears that my fears were justified and that others are learning too of another clever ruse by insurers.

I do still have a car, I just have little need of it right now and resent being forced to buy insurance just to keep the NCD.

Quentin can your suggestion really work: buy policy and cancel within cooling off period - if so, this could be 'genius'?

    Thank you all once again.

If you are a named driver on your partners vehicle, then alternating the car insurance from year to year can also mean it wont go out of date (you dont mention who you are on a policy as a named driver with, so not sure if this will work for you)

Does buying temporary insurance, say for one day, reset the NCD clock?

    No .
  • Sorry to sound a bit slow people, but what exactly is meant by "resetting the NCD 'clock'" ?
Is buying a policy and cancelling within cooling off still what we believe to be the best way out of this - I assume without the paperwork from the new insurer (showing NCD obtained), this wouldn't work?

Thanks again to all contributors; it is very much appreciated.
