in fact, most investors in railways didn't do so well out of it. but the infrastructure got built, which is what matters.

Fortunately infrastructure investing has done rather better in recent times. I have a two pronged approach of an active global fund and focused direct holdings.

It's been clear for years that income tax and VAT isn't enough to keep Ponzi welfarism and the EU going, so the Govt. is desperate to find ways of stealing capital from middle-classes.

The 2% 'Mansion Tax' was a step to far for now, so expect anyone with savings of more than £85,000 to be denounced as a "hoarder" by the controlled media. The 'excess' capital will be seized in exchange for Perpetuals paying 0.5%.

The Mansion Tax will cut in by 2020, note the 'softening up' by today's report that housing assets are 'worth' ££ Trillions.

They've stolen our pensions, they tax tax (VAT on fuel duty), they've propped up banksters, they've squandered ££ billions on the Euro, they give ££M to India in 'aid'. I wouldn't trust them with a farthing.

I personally feel that this new infrastructure opportunity will be worthy of consideration but the key thing is that it's going to be optional.

The lottery is a mugs game, so I don't do it. Ditto premium bonds, backing horses, bingo, unit trusts, and poker. What's great about all of these, and the new proposals is that it's optional. If you don't like it, then you don't put your money in.

    All taxes should be optional!

It would never work with the necessary bits of the welfare state, but this would be interesting as an experiment.

Pick and choose what taxes you want to pay and what you get in return. Access to the NHS, police, fire service, courts, roads, etc all optional. I suspect plenty of people would pay nothing and then whine when the fire brigade sit back and let their house burn. And the arsonists won't be prosecuted because the non-payers haven't paid for police or courts!

And still happen in US as I recalled. In the article I was reading, the city will offer fire service to surrounding rural areas in exchange of annual fee. Someone did not bother to pay and rang for fire service, he was pleading for fire service to come and save his house, even offering considerable sum of money. Of course, the fire service said, "No, you did not pay the fee."

    Cheers

It was that tale that sparked my comment, but I've not been able to find the reference to it.

so can i opt out of paying for wars in iraq/afganistan, and of keeping nukes, but pay for keeping a small standing army/navy/RAF?

amusing, but it wouldn't work ...

what about children whose parents can't/won't pay for schools? (and can ppl start paying for schools when when their first child starts school, and stop when their youngest child finishes? because then the annual cost per parent would be much higher than the current cost per taxpayer.)

what about school leavers who've never had a job (and will never get one because their parents couldn't afford to send them to school)?

it's not like we don't already have the problem that parents with poor educational results and low employability tend to have children with the same problems.

My tongue was firmly in my cheek! However, it did seem that a few were getting rather aeriated about something that would be offered to them but which they need not participate in.

As was mine (aside from my comment that it wouldn't work).

It's a nice thought experiment though!
