Combi boiler banging noise

Hi

I have an Ariston Microgenus combi boiler that has started making banging noises.

The noise goes away when the boiler is working (ie hot water or CH on), but starts up again shortly after closing the tap.

A GSR tradesman came this morning and replaced the air pressure switch, and the noise stopped until later today.

Any ideas what the problem is before he comes again tomorrow? Also, safe to use in the meantime?

Thanks for any help!

You've already got someone on the job and he's back tomorrow. How does introducing a load of (some informed, some uninformed) opinion from anonymous people on a site like this who haven't seen it, felt it or heard it this help? What does he say about using it in the meantime?

    Cheers

Sounds like it may be an air lock.

You have to try really, really, really hard to get a mains pressure system to airlock.

Merely concern that he was of the opinion it was fixed and it wasn't. This made me a bit wary of his opinions.

I understand I may not end up any the wiser after getting responses here but would perhaps allay my worry, and also suggest things to ask tomorrow, prices of parts to research by tomorrow.

Sorry if this offends you - if you felt I was wasting your time I'd rather you hadn't used any to reply to me.

Not in the slightest old chap.

No - I'm more concerned about wasting your time potentially getting your head filled with all sorts of stuff (Like airlocks) that might be totally irrelevant actually. The very last thing you want tomorrow is to let slip the "well that bloke on MSE said...." line when it doesn't look as if its going swimmingly. That will really endear you to him and help your relationship no end.

Having said that perhaps you should be wary in case he's a "change one component at a time until the problem goes away" sort of fellow but you ain't going to find that out remotely I'm afraid.

    Cheers

  • Thank you for your concern. The 'change one thing at a time' thing is one thing that was really worrying me.

I had this exact same problem with my boiler. A bit cheeky but I took out boiler cover with British Gas and got them to fix it. It needed a replacement part … sorry, but can't for the life of me remember what part that was! We've not had a problem with ours since. It was trial and error really as the same engineer came out about three times in the space of a month but we got there in the end!

How long does the noise go on for after the hot tap is turned off?

I am thinking that there is a circulation and overheat type problem perhaps, or maybe the boiler isn't shutting off quick enough once the tap goes off. Check any auto bypass valve if this has one fitted.

Banging is usually related to the above mentioned problems. Cant see why any one would replace the air pressure switch, or did you mean the auto air vent?

When there's a banging in the central heating you have to try really really hard to say exactly where it's coming from.

I know that which is one reason why I have not offered an opinion. So what is your point SVP?
