OK, and do you have a contract already? I guess you will want a data allowance so you can use the internet?

The Carphone Warehouse do a Samsung Galaxy Ace for £7.50 a month (24 months) with 250 minutes, 5000 texts and 500MB internet. https://www.carphonewarehouse.com/mobiles/mobile-phones/SAMSUNG-GALAXY-ACE/MONTHLY £35 Topcashback too on that. It's a decent enough Android smartphone.

Have you actually used iOS or Windows Phone, as well as droid? Droid pales into insignificance in comparison for simplicity, and that's what the OP requires.

All three OS's support GMail natively, so the support of which, is nothing to shout about.
My three year old can navigate around my Android phone and use apps etc so its not that complicated for many people but I guess it can seem complicated for some people like you I guess.

As to the OP, like you I to was new to smart phones a few years ago but never had problems with my Android phone. I have used iPhones and blackberries and symbian and windows phones. Don't be taken in by the rubbish showed in forums that Android is complicated. Just go to a store and use some of them our use friends phones. Most of the operating systems do what the general users need, stop base your decision on your likes and budget. Try them all if interested then decide. There are numerous Android phones of varying specs and budget to suit every need. Try iPhones too if that interests you. Be happy with what ever you buy.

Do you want tethering to your computer?
Do you want wifi hot spot on your phone?
Do you want free google navigation?
Do you want free fm radio that can record?
    Do you want expandable memory?
    Do you want removable battery?
Do hog want ability to plug in USB devices like flash drives, cameras, hard disks, mouse etc?
Do you want wifi proxy access in university?
Do you want to use it as a gaming device with gaming controllers and play ps1 or gameboy games etc?
Do you want many apps? Like Instagram etc
Do you want Skype video chatting?

Think what are your needs and budget and answers to questions like I mentioned then decide. Will try to link to YouTube video dispelling myth about iPhone bring simpler than Android, but busy now so might link later tomorrow

Check out Huawei Ascend G300 at around £100!. See hot UK deals website for a recent thread a about deals for this phone. See reviews for the phone on techradar and electricpig websites etc.

But don't expect the Moon from a budget smart phone though.

Especially when it is easily technically comparable to an iphone 4

Just linking to YouTube video that dispels the myth the Android is complicated compared to iOS.

    See http://m.youtube.com/watch?v=NMiY1kSTHZw
And also see the five other videos in the same series under the video makers profile that should be enough for starters to dispel some myths that Android is complicated compared to iOS.

Watch the six videos and make up your own mind as to whether there is any substance to some myths that Android is more complicated than iOS.

edit: link to the post with 6 video links http://forums.moneysavingexpert.com/showpost.php?p=53616979&postcount=56
