Tesco-Customer honesty not reciprocated apparently!

Options
Hiya! I'm not sure whether this should be here or on the Consumer Rights section but I thought I'd play it safe and post here.

A while back, I was shopping at Tesco with my father and when we got to the cashier, we started bagging our food as normal. It was then that I noticed an Iphone 4 in a distinctive case in the bagging area that someone must have left behind. I handed it in to the cashier (who as this point had not even looked at me or taken any interest in his job at all) but for some reason had the feeling that it was not going to be handed in to anybody and was going to go straight into the cashier's pocket.

Because of this 'gut instinct', I went into Tesco again a couple of days later, went to the Customer Services desk and asked the (again very bored looking) lady working if anybody had handed in an Iphone 4. I deliberately worded it that way so that the woman would presume that I was the person who lost the phone so I could see what she would say. (I'm apparently not a very trusting person but with good reason IMO!)

She swiftly proceeded to tell me that there hadn't been without making any checks with anyone at all so I asked if she could check (politely!)

She grabbed a book (lost and found presumably) from under the counter and repeated that, no, nobody had handed one in. I said; "Well that's odd because I am the person that handed it in! I just wanted to check to make sure that it had gotten back to it's owner because I didn't think it would somehow."

The lady then got rather aggresive and asked me what I was accusing her of. My father, who was with me again, said that we weren't accusing her of anything to which the lady replied: "SHE did!" Whilst jabbing at me. I was outraged at this woman's attitude ad asked for the Manager. She went and got him after around 15 minutes (!) and took him out of earshot (But not sight) and was obviously waffling about how I'd accused her of stealing or something.

The Manager eventually came over and we explained the full situation, describing the cashier that day and asking that we be kept informed as to what happened over the matter. The Manager (Who seemed much more pleasant) promised he would keep us in the loop and we left, expecting a call from him within the next 48 hours. It never came...obviously!

If I was a dishonest person, I could have kept the phone and sold it. It's not like I'm rich! There was no point in me handing it in if that's what the cashier was going to do and I believe he should be strongly disiplined/sacked for it. I would be so gutted if I lost an expensive phone like that and on hindsight, maybe I should have taken it with me and phoned a number on it to find who it belonged to but I didn't want the cameras to see me walking out of the store with it as it would look like I was stealing it if you see what I mean.

I also feel that the 'Customer Service' lady needed far better customer service skills (having done much of that sort of work myself) and that the Manager shoulddefinately have kept us informed asnow I just believe that it has been forgotten about and the cashier has made himselfa few quid!

I didn't go back into Tesco again to check up on it since as I was made to feel like a busybody/wrongdoer for handing it in in the first place.

Sorry it's so long! Any thoughts?

How do you know the customer that lost the phone didn't go back to the cashier afterwards and ask if their phone had been handed in. If you remembered that you had left it at the till that would probably be your first port of call before going to customer services.

Therefore it may have been handed back, but never made it as far as getting logged in the book.

That may be true however I would have thought that the cashier would have reported it to the Manager so that he was covered etc. That's what I would have done. Also, if that was the case, the Manager should have let me know that that is what had happened as he said he'd keep me informed. I mean, what if the customer denied having been given the phone back? It would have been solely the cashiers' word if he hadn't reported it first if you see my point?

Don't worry about it, if the customer had lost it I'd have thought they would have contacted the service provider to have it blocked anyway.

Personally I'd have handed it to the Customer Service desk myself to be sure as unfortunately you cannot bank on anyone being as honest as you are these days, sad but true.

I would email customer services and get it looked into properly, as well as complaining about the poor service.

I think you are over thinking it, I used to work on checkouts a few years ago and people used to leave things at checkouts all the time. We used to keep hold of it for a while incase the customer came back and then hand it over to a supervisor when we had the chance.

It starts to get silly if you start reporting every little thing just to cover yourself.

To be honest, you've done your bit by reporting the incident to the worker and to the manager - other than that you have no right to be kept informed about how their internal investigations go. Further more, it would be reckless for them to tell you of any disciplinary action taken against the employee.

Although I understand your point and clearly your an honest sole to hand it in in the first place.

Do you still have your receipt? It should have the name or ID number of the employee on it.. then perhaps email head office before leaving it there.

Was she "jabbing" at you or pointing at you?

Yes I agree, I should have given it to the CS desk (Not that her attitude made me feel that she would keep it safe though! lol). I didn't think of that til later you see! lol.

I don't really want to get involved anymore. Tesco made me feel like I was somehow in the wrong for handing it in. I'm sure they'd rather it was swept under the rug! lol. I really would feel like a trouble maker if I carried it on.

I really just wanted to know if the phone had gotten back to it's owner really I suppose. Or maybe that it in fact had been investigated.

She wasn't actually touching me, just waving her finger a few inches from my face. I think she popped my 'personal space' bubble! lol. Should I claim for that?! Just kidding! :)

I don't have the receipt, this was a while ago now. Maybe about March. I showed the manager the till he was working on though and what time it was approximately.

I just put it up here because I thought it was a sad indicative of today's society that now, no good deed goes unpunished etc. (I'm 25 not 125 by the way!) lol.
