Don't know if I'm way off the mark but what about a standard smart phone but a super resistant case? I have an iPhone, not everyone's cup of tea I know, and I have a Garmin Survivor case for it, 3 months down the line and no complaint - although I know there are mixed reviews.

I think Motorola Defy is the most 'tough' of the smartphones. Am not sure about ICS though, and I would refrain from dropping any smartphone without a good protective case.
You may wait for Sony Acro S

thnaks for the reply, im looking towards something thats rugged/water resistant in its own right, plus a removable battery is a must as i can be away from power/chargers for some timeFrom the Plain Language Commission:

I keep seeing adverts for the new JCB phone which is apparantly very tough and looks like a smartphone from what I can see on the pics. It's called the Toughphone Prosmart - here's the link http://www.jcbphone.co.uk/handset-range
Doh yes - its an Android phone. I've got a BlackBerry so I have no idea what the latest Android is but thought this might help*The RK and FF fan club* #Family*Don’t Be Bitter- Glitter!* #LotsOfLove ‘Darling you’re my blood, you have my heartbeat’ Dad 20.02.200 -

I think the Prosmart only runs Android Gingerbread, and won't be upgradeable to the latest Android. They're an impressive range of robust phones though. The Toughphone Tradesman claims to be the "worlds first floating phone!"
The Acro S is probably your best shout. As it gives you similar specs to a Sony Xperia S (Android ICS compatible) but with extra water resistance.0 -
I was out on my motorcycle on Sunday and got caught in quite a heavy shower but it only lasted about 5mins.The rain had got through my jacket and some water had reached my Samsung Galaxy S2,nothing drastic, just looked like a little bit of surface water on the touch screen.Might not have seemed like anything to worry about initially but ive now got a very dead GS2 and i'm only 10mnths into a 24mnth contract with O2.
These phones are fantastic pieces of technology but they are extremely fragile in my opinion and need to be handled like a box of fresh eggs.0 -
BTDT... a downpout riding trhrough Newry meant my phone failled very quickly as my pockets filled with rainwater.
I then learned to use a polythene bag - very cheap and works with your existing case!0
