Anyone researched wood briquettes?

  • I have now investigated many different briquettes, and tried several of them. I found the Liverpool briquettes quite good but eventually went with a bulk order of 70% blazes and 30% bark logs. I am getting on really well with blazers, which keep going all night and heat the water and radiators really well. I don't think the bark logs are any better so I won't bother with them again. I found that once I had a good bed of ash, I could turn the fire fully down and just leave it to tick away. Even when I think its gone out, it still picks back up with nothing more than time!

How much were the Blazers? Where did you get them from?

I've now tried 2 packs of Hotties and yes they give out good heat and stay together, they also burn for about 2 hours, but, I've gone and ordered a pallet of Heatlogs, £300 delivered for 1000Kg, it may just be my fire/chimney but they burn with flames for about one hour and then glow for another and I like the flames, something that the Hotties only do for half an hour or so, I'm now putting half a log on at a time every hour, so I always have flames. Even my well seasoned logs are taking a rest after using these Heatlogs.

The main thing is the fire/chimney/air supply every house will create a different scenario, so use what you find best. If I hadn't used Heatlogs then I would have bought a pallet of Hotties. But next door find the Hotties better!!!

Whichever briquettes you use they will all be hotter than the equivalent weight of wood.
  • I can't remember how much I paid, but I got them from Woof Woodfuels, who were very helpful. My fire only has bottom air vent, which is not ideal for burning wood, but it really only seems to matter when I am relighting. The most important thing was building up a good layer of ash to burn on. This has only happened once in the last two weeks! I used a product called wood miser, which is supposed to distribute heat, although in my case, it also stopped all the ash falling through the grate bars! I am only emptying the ash pans (which are very small) once per week.

Looking for holiday ideas for 2016. Currently, Isle of Skye in March, Riga in May, Crete in June and Lake District in October. August cruise cancelled, but Baby due September 2016! :j
  • In home bargains they have briquettes that look just like blazes. They are only £1.99 for an 8kg pack. That makes them really cheap!

If anyone is still following this thread, I am now using the Home Bargains briquettes. They are £1.99 for four and do a really good job.- in fact, far better than many dearer ones that I have tried! They can be ordered online and delivered to a local store, which means you don't have to fork out for bulk orders. They are really hot and quite long lasting, being very similar to Blazers.:j
  • I tried a pack of these at the weekend. They expanded a lot and lasted about as long as a decent sized log. At £1.99 for 4 I think they would work out dearer than seasoned wood.

Just thought I'd put an update about the Heatlogs I bought in November.

Pallet of 1000Kg delivered 23rd November i.e. 100 boxes. I now have 48 boxes left so working out, 52 boxes used over 77 days. So working the £'s out it comes close to £2/day and this is the only heating I have at home. I have sold 12 boxes to my neighbour but, bought £20 of logs( 5 large bags) for Christmas so this roughly balances out.

    Or voice and echo? :rotfl:
  • Don't understand why anyone would buy heat logs - I purchased 10 packs of 12 at £2.40 each, and they lasted about 4 hours....
