get a vw polo. you may get around an 04 reg with sensible mileage for around 2 grand. it will really keep its money when you come to sell it. they are bulletproof.
Yes but...................IMHO..........
Polo is expensive and overweight which impairs what must be a good engine trying to get out. Massively overrated and only bought by badge snobs. Any number o f alternatives are better and will most likely be more reliable, eg Corsa
Trouble is one mans perfect car is another mans heap of junk.**** I hereby relieve MSE of all legal responsibility for my post and assume personal responsible for all posts. If any Parking Pirates have a problem with my post then contact me for my solicitors address.*****0 -
I had a P-reg Audi Avant that I paid £1,600 for (nicknamed Old Greg) and it lasted me 3 years with no major expense at all, just servicing and MOTs, only ended up giving it away because I got a company car at that time. I loved that car!
The good thing also is that an old Audi of that era won't rust either as the body is galvanised. It was also a lovely car to drive, very smooth, very solid and quiet.0 -
Perhaps go coffin following, looking for an old codger whose family wants to offload a surplus car to pay off the vicar and the grave digger.0

With such low mileage I would look beyond small hatch they are too popular, there is better value in the unwanted.
High mileage newer car over older lower mileage.
Avoid newer diesels with DPF older ones ok we have 2 doing low mileages and they have been fine, both french(1998,2002), allthough the 98 started to have a few things over the last 3 years, alternator the big one.
Think about the annual budget after purchase
tax and insurance will be a significant part of the total cost only doing a few k a year.
Agree with the previous point look at other options if possible, car hire and taxi and public might be around the same and zero risk,
It is cheaper for me to take the bus(£5 return) to the next town just on fuel(38 round trip) and parking(£1.50+) and only 10-15 mins longer on a 45min trip.
My car is £500 a year before it moves with tax, insurance, mot, the other one lower tax is around £300.
A local weekly bus pass is £10, £300py.0 -
How times change.
I remember the time when to suggest buying a Skoda was a joke.
Definitely not a joke now. 2k will get you a skoda fabia around 10 years old. If you get one with the 1.9 pd engine, you've got 100bhp but cheap insurance and economy in the 55-60mpg range. Mileage isn't a problem as you see some at 250k. The bodies are galvanised. You can also get an estate version which is only a little longer but has boot space bigger than most cars a class higher.
Had one for about 8 years. No problems apart from routine maintenance.
The rest of the range is pretty good too. Not sure that Skoda have produced anything poor for over 10 years now.0 -
Honda Jazz
Toyota Yaris
Nissan Micra
Fiat Panda
My choice for a cheap reliable car would be the Micra.
If you are only doing 2,500 miles pa, DO NOT get a diesel.0 -
I have a 2001 Nissan Micra 1.0 16v S with 51k on the clock as a run around and it's superb! It has never missed a beat. It's been serviced when required and always looked after. Not exactly the most coolest of cars but it's a means of transport.0
