    How about a pyrocantha (firethorn)? It is nice and spiny, evergreen with bright orange berries?

    Are you going to see the pot/plant at all?

    Are you going to be willing/want to water whatever you put in there?

    If the answer to these are no then I'd go for something else to fill the gap rather than a pot/plant. You can get nice twisted metal poles with ceramic balls on the top or see if you can get part of a tree trunk and stand that there,
