    Hows it 'completely different'?

Its a 3 series BMW. Nice cars, but lets keep it in perspective.

Go on then i'll bite, you should be able to get some amusing (to you) quips in to give an inkling why, as in your original post question, you don't get customers like me.

Its different because its specified well, has a lovely interior, which is subject to taste of course, and is a genuine one owner full MB history car, thats done 20k miles.

The blessed thing isn't run in yet.

The OP wants it as a keeper, if he looks after it from day one, waxoyls etc and finds a good specilialst indy to maintain it, he will be running one of the nicest and most practical convertibles around, if he wants a car for a year and then flog on then this wouldn't be the car for him, it would be a pity IMO for such a good example to be passed from pillar to post..

This car is already on it's way to time warp condition, looked after this has the possibility to be classic material.

If you only want a gangsta street corner convertible thats been through several hands already the there are pages of the stuff, clocked, abused, ill maintained and cheap as chips.

To get a car like this to keep for a long time means paying a high price in the first place.

No i agree it isn't special now, but given some TLC it has every chance of enjoying very slow depreciation as the years go by.

10 years from now there will be very few real convertibles left, as you know nearly all since these are gaining tin roofs which is fine as it means surviving convertibles gain rarity.

Thats why i maintain this is already a specialist car, its low mileage and one owner give it provenance, that word you find so amusing, in 15 years time if the OP keeps it that long and looks after it, that provenance will mean the difference between some 6 or 10 owner neglected clocked heap, and a two owner pristine car with proven history, one is a banger and probably fit for the scrap heap if it survives that long, the other should go on to classic status...this one has a good start.

For proof of this concept look see how much MB W124 convertibles of good history are fetching.

BMW E46 in my honest opinion, both in coupe and convertible form some of the prettiest cars ever made, far more handsome and classier than the later models, as W124 above.

The customer like you reference was that i rarely come across customers who are so willing to pay over the odds.

Its a nice car, but its in no way unique, and also its in the less desirable SE spec. Its certainly not worth £13K and nowhere near it. This is MSE after all - why go in high?

To get a car like this to keep for a long time means paying a high price in the first place.

Where did the O/P say they were going to keep it for a long time?

No i agree it isn't special now, but given some TLC it has every chance of enjoying very slow depreciation as the years go by.

I think you're assuming a lot. The O/P currently drives an 02 MINI Cooper auto. I suspect they plan on using this car as a replacement for that as their day to day runabout, which would seriously impact its value would it not?

I think you're off on some tangent here about how one should buy a car with provenance and keep it 20 years and perhaps it may have some value.

If thats your bag, then great. I personally dont think its the car, or spec of car, to be doing that with. Assuming someone were to take that car and keep it for 'just' 10 years, nursing it, maintaining it, then i'd estimate it'll lose close to £10,000 off the price you believe its worth. Why do i say that? well, heres a 1997 e36 variant with just 30K miles and one owne from new...

    Hey all,

I return to see my thread has generated some discussion :).

Thanks for pointing out that it's the SE and not the M. I did ask the lady owner, but she didn't know and I just assumed a two door soft top, with xenons and leathers would be M Sport! It's very difficult, without looking at the manual etc to work out. Either that, or I'm just not qualified enough!

While I do admit £13k might be a bit pricey, I think she'd slam the door in my face if I offered less than £10.5k and I think, as I mentioned, the private sale value should be about £12-£12.5k.

I think I'll open negotiations at £12k and see if she bites. She's a friend of a friend as I said so no danger of really upsetting her.

I test drove it the other day with the top down and it was a great experience!

You're off you're rocker - retail on that will be £10-11k max and you want to offer somebody another grand for a private sale with no comeback? As already mentioned it's an SE not an M sport, I also seriously dislike wood in a modern car and not keen on the leather colour but that's just what I (dont) like so irrelevant really

If the car is absolutely exceptional in every way then give £10k for it with the knowledge that it's exactly what you want and you're not paying THAT much more than it's actually worth.

Have you driven this btw? Had a brief stint with a manual 320ci and it wasn't quick, suppose you still get the decent 6 cylinder soundtrack but the 330 is a far, far better car and not really any different on fuel.

*edit just re-read the above, as long as you're happy with the performance (or lack of) on tap*

I'd be opening a lot lower than that. You are definitely paying a large premium there for what no doubt is a very nice car. The danger here is though that you pay a premium now for this, drive it for two or three years by which point the additional miles, additional owner, etc will make it closer to an 'average' car, thus come resale time, you'd be losing that extra premium, PLUS the depreciation that you will naturally get PLUS she'll be hit further by the drop in the price of the new models which is softening all the time too.

I would have thought £10K was plenty

With supporting evidence in my hand I'd be opening a long way short of £10k and simply walk away if she wanted stupid money.

I think she'd let you, she wants to sell it, not give it away.
