Aol problems problems problems

Options
Just got off the phone to AOL again !!, my speed had dropped down from 1500/2100 kbps to about 950/960kbps download, this is on the silver package. Ive done random speed checks over the past week and all have been low. After a lengthy conversation with Aol tech department they claim this is normal and BT Guidlines show anywhere between 400kbps/2000kbps as normal, this dosnt explain why mine has dropped suddenly ?? they say while its between the guidelines they cant report a fault. Anybody else had this ??

The next thing is if i do a Bt speed check to show what maximum speed my line will take it shows at 1.5mb, ive queried this as i know my neighbour (semi detached house) gets 5mb plus, ive checked, ive also checked other neighbours speeds and they are all showing 5mb plus, we all go to the same telegraph pole and all go to the same change, ive phoned BT and they say it Aol's resposobility and they must contact BT, AOL just say speedcheck shows 1.5mb and its not their problem, does it make sense that the whole street can get 5mb plus and i cant .... or is it just me ?? everyone i speak to just does a speedcheck and basicaly says if that what it says then that what it says. ....

help!!!!

  • Hi Steveowen100,

I believe that the AOL silver package is a fixed rate product of 2Mb.

You would need to go onto a 'speeds up to 8Mb' product to get the same speed as your neighbours.

    Kind regards,

I know what you are saying, stevie!!

Your neighbours higher speeds are relevant only to the adslmax service

Use this site to check what is available on your line:

    http://www.samknows.com/broadband/checker2.php

You will be able to see if the fixed 2mb service is available (together with all other products available on your line)
  • Thanks for the reply guys...

However what im trying to say is, when i contacted AOL about increasing my speed they said no can do your line will only take 2mb, i tell them hang on next door neighbours are getting 5mb plus with their provider so is the guy 3 doors up with his provider, i tell them all the house sare going to the same telegraph pole and using the same exchange, why cant i go higher??? they tell me contact BT its their problem. BT say AOL need to contact us its not our problem, who's problem is it ? and surely if my neighbours are getting 5mb plus using the same exchange, should'nt i in theory be ably to upgrade my speed ???

    thanks again

Did you check out your number on that checker?

What did it say regarding adsl max?

Could your neighbours be getting an adsl2 service?

Just because your neighbour can get 5mb, doesnt mean that you can automatically get it. Each line going to every address in the country is different.

There are many factors as to why different lines can hold different speeds. The most common ones are the length of the line & the way its routed back to the exchange (and remember this isnt as the crow flies!) & the actual quality of your telephone line.

    :)
  • Hi quentin

ive checked my number on the checker and it says i can only acheive 1.5mb on adsl max, ive checked my neighbours number (semi detached house) and it says he can acheive 6mb on adsl max we are both 1.87km from the exchange.??? cant figure it.

    thanks

read my previous post, theres a lot of reasons why the speed could differ! :)

It seems the advice from AOL is correct - as normanmark has pointed out, you cannot use any stats from your neighbour's line as an argument for your own being poor.

Your line capability looks to be in line with what AOL are providing you with on the silver package, and you may have to live with this.

If speed is important, maybe you could do a deal with your neighbour to share a wireless connection via his ISP?
  • Thanks again for the reply guys

however im not convinced, if next door has 5mb +, and the guy 2 doors up has 5mb + and the guy next door to him is acheiving the same all in a row and if the speed is determined by line length and quality and distance from the excange, we are all going to the same distrubution pole and the checker says we are all the same distance from the exchange which is 8mb enabled, it makes no sense that mine is distributed via another path, thus reducing speed.

    Thanks again
