It's not my logic, but I can understand it.
Once you've been in the situation where the gap is being constantly filled, it's easy to decide that it's pointless as you're going to end up too close regardless. What they forget is that that particular situation doesn't happen that often so their solution shouldn't become the default.
It's the same sort of logic that leads to MLMism, once they've driven right up to the backside of a truck and then found nobody will let them out because they're going 15-20 mph too slow. They decide to just stay in the middle lane... A similar thing also happens to some people who live in areas with lots of left-lane peel-off type junctions.0 -

Can't say that's been a big problem either. I indicate right, they let me out. Or I indicate right. I see a gap, pull out, if they want to pass, they pull into the third lane. I've never been stuck really.0 -
Yes, Mikey, but you probably aren't stupid enough to get right behind the gigantic brightly coloured lorry before deciding, "well shucks... I guess I'd better change lane". Instead you will likely move out in plenty of time while doing a similar speed to the lane to your right, thus people will be more inclined to let you out.0

I drive a motorhome as well as a car. It's not fast, but it's faster than a lorry. So I find I'm in the first lane, but normally don't have any problem getting out, most other drivers flash me out, or move over. It's very rare I get stuck. I rarely manage the speed of the vehicles to the right though

When I drive I don't want to be anywhere near a lorry. Lorry drivers drive all day long. It's expected that they will let their concentration slide. They're not going to be as observant as a hatchback with young family goiing on a day out for instance.
I expect lorry drivers on here are going to chime in and disagree. I call B.S. it's human nature, doing a menial job is tiring, especially when you're doing the same routes day in day out. No way are they going to be just focusing on the road ahead at all times.
So just stay the hell away. I don't like driving beside them and in front of them. If there is a lorry in front I will most likely change lanes too.. (can't see jack from behind them)0 -

the most annoying thing is when a the britespark pulls infront of you and breaks ,when you left room to stop and wonders why he got a upset lorry driver up his rear end ,shaking coffee beans at him(think about that one)
usually in slow moving traffic ,they still take a car to a car and half to stop even at 5 to 10 mph fully loaded ,
so that gap is not for you,
and yes you do get muppets driving to close ,i had one the other week ,and it was nice to see the boys in blue pull him ,
who came up with the 2 second gap ,because thats usless too ,got shown a video at work a few years back about that ,you realy need 20 seconds or more to stop ,2 seconds is wasted just making the lights work and then your brain processing it ,and then moving your foot ,to get the breaks to start working ,ho dear you hit the thing in frontthere or their, one day i might us the right one ,until then tuff0 -
And of course, if you do leave the correct gap, as soon as an obstruction comes up further ahead, at least 3 cars will fill that gap for you.
Back off to leave a correct gap... 3 more cars.
It's not surprising that many people just give up trying these days.
Too right.
After many years (too many) of driving trucks, it never ceased to amaze me the number of times I would leave a safe distance between 40 odd tons of truck going at 56 mph and the car in front - them some clown in a car would drive into it - probably one of those on here moaning about the truck drivers driving too close to them!
And as for the number of car drivers who do not know how to safely use an entry slip on a motorway or dual carriageway.........!
For your information - vehicles already on the carriageway DO NOT have to pull over or slow down to let you on - the onus is on you to enter the carriageway safely.
Of course, if it is safe to do so, then fine - but the number of idiots who just grit their teeth and pull onto the carriageway without giving a toss to those who have to brake or avoid a collision.
I have had many gestures directed at me because I did not pull over to let them on a dual carriageway or motorway. What they did not realise was that there was likely a vehicle overtaking me at the time or I would have had to pull over in front of somebody who was about to overtake me.
Once you have had to brake for these idiots, I can assure you that getting back up to speed is not as quick as a car.
Yes - there are some idiot truck drivers as well - but there are also some car drivers who should not be allowed on the road.
And as for car drivers who overtake you and then decide to pull in front of you and brake or slow down..............!0 -
