Car stereo cutting out

Hi

We have a ford focus zetec 2000 and we've recently started having problems with the stereo, it will sometimes come on but then after a while it cuts out, it'll come back on for a few seconds cut out again etc. Sometimes it won't come on at all. It seems to work better when it's colder, don't know what that means or if it's just coincidence.

I just wanted to ask for advice of things to check before we go out and buy a new one.

Thanks
Hayley

    i have one does this
i have got it going by taking out the removable front and replacing it,however the sound is now going slightly distorted on the cd side so i know the unit is dieing
i got another low mileage one out of a scrapper i took in the other week so will be fitting that soon
my dodgy one will be going on ebay in the fullness of time and i expect bidding will be brisk with a 99p start:D

You need to check the power supply so you can be sure it's the stereo that's faulty. Does everything else on the same fuse work ok. Is the fuse on the back of the unit ok.

Could even be the previous owner blew the fuse, didn't have a spare and just shoved some tin foil into the fuse holder...... Need to check all the possible external causes BEFORE you start to blame the stereo itself, otherwise it could get very costly.

  • It's a 12 year old radio. Like everything else, they don't last for ever.

A replacement will be very cheap from a scrapyard or on eBay.

I don't know if the stereo is 12 years old? It could have been replaced.

Anyway, somebody gave us one they had that is pretty much the same model and that seems to be working okay, so fingers crossed it was the stereo and it's all fixed now.

    Thanks for the replies.

Are you sure it's not overheating. Some radios have a small fan on the back to keep them cool, not sure about the focus though

nope they dont have a cooler fan, my DVD/CD/SATnav one does and youll hear it kick up on ignition start but as far as focus ones go their not that technical to warrant having one.

Make sure the contacts on the removable buttons on the front are clean and they are fully pushed home, there is a small button over the number 2 button that you slide to the left to release the unit
    Hope this helps you.

I'm not sure if you realised, but just before this post the OP confirmed that the problem is solved, but three people are trying to post advice to a problem which has been sorted already.

    Why?
