It's the same as when they start 'playing' with themselves, You just have to discourage them from doing it in public whilst telling them it is normal!

Reminds me of a little boy of about three, who was obviously bored waiting in the queue at Comet. He was there with his willy out whilst his parents were engrossed in conversation!

Yep, completely normal! As others have said, it's a nice feeling to him. You just need to (as he gets older) steer him away from doing it *in public*.

When my son was old enough to understand, I told him that it was fine for him to do that sort of thing when he was on his own in bed, but that he shouldn't do it when other people were around.

My daughter used to hump cushions and toys in her playpen when she was around 18 months old.

She soon grew out of it, thank God!

OMG I had forgotten my DD did this as well.

Thank you all for your replies. At least now that I know it's 'normal' behaviour, I can stop worrying. He just seems so engrossed and determined when he gets going - I had visions of him being banned from nursery or worst :o . Funny that none of the child rearing books mention it though.

First term as a newly qualified reception teacher, my TA (who was best friends with the mum of the child in question) tips me off that one of the boys in the class had a rather... ahem... long one and used to tuck it between his legs and jiggle about in class cos it felt nice. While not something they'd prepared you for in teacher training - it comes up time and time again with little boys and their little toys and schools and nurseries generally just employ a bit of brisk, cheerful distraction!

The Phantom Jiggler grew out of the habit pretty quickly!

You're right - the books don't say anything about it!

My friend used to hate taking her daughter anywhere in the car around that age as daughter used to have a rub up against the straps securing her.
