Baby son - is this normal?

I am a regular poster with an embarassing question, hence the AE.

I am too embarassed to ask any of my health visitor, friends or family members about this, just in case it is totally abnormal. My ex-partner has taken off, so I can't discuss it with him.

Basically my son is fifteen months old. About two months ago I noticed that he will sometimes press his groin against my leg repeatedly - a bit like the neighbours dog before they had him 'done' IYSWIM.

The first time, I was sitting on the floor with my legs outstretched and he crawled over them as usual. However instead of crawling all the way over, he stopped half way and just kept pressing his front against my knee. I moved my legs and he actually followed them and positioned himself in exactly the same place. Last week he did the same thing with one of his toys which was lying on the floor. He does this regularly - i.e. it was not a one off.

Before anyone asks, no I am not a troll and this is not a wind up. I just wondered if any parents out there had experience of this?

I think little boys discover how enjoyable their willies are quite early on, think you need to discourage him from public displays on your leg though :-)

yep - perfectly normal for both boys and girls to discover that some things feel nice from very early on!

    Not abnormal at all :D

Just treat it like anything else your baby does which he thinks is fun but you wish to discourage - like throwing porridge or tipping water out of his bath. Distract and divert without making a fuss are my normal strategies. They do grow out of it quite quickly.
  • Whilst i've not seen another child of this age actively do what you describe, i would say it was normal behaviour and not to worry. Your baby has discovered a sensation that he enjoys, at this age it isn't anything sexual, just a stimulation of feeling.

If it makes you feel better, i've seen children who are 2/3/4, rolling around on the floor, grinding their bodies to a toy or to the carpet. Again its a sensation they have discovered, but its our interpretation of a sexual thing that makes us feel bad about it.

It will pass, in a few months time you'll be worrying about something else. And if it does persist, when he becomes 2, 3, 4, you can kindly suggest that sort of behaviour is best done alone in his bedroom. Just to avoid your embarrassment when your neighbours pop round.;)

perfectly normal, stop worrying. Don't chastise him, just move him out of the position when he starts to do it.

My son loves doing this to my leg, but you'd think he'd have grown out of it now he's 18 years old :(

I wouldn't worry OP, it seems to be perfectly normal.

I was relieved though as I mis-read your post and I thought you said your son was 15 (years) old!

My daughter used to hump cushions and toys in her playpen when she was around 18 months old.

She soon grew out of it, thank God!

Thank you all for your replies. At least now that I know it's 'normal' behaviour, I can stop worrying. He just seems so engrossed and determined when he gets going - I had visions of him being banned from nursery or worst :o . Funny that none of the child rearing books mention it though.
