My very lovely boyfriend offered to buy me a sewing machine- i shopped around on the internet to check prices then went to some sewing machine shops to try some out.
I quizzed them about prices and the one I wanted was the last in shop- i said what can you do it for and they eventually they threw in a bag worth £20 and a quilting table for £50- i knew the machine worked and how to use it and ended up with a much better price than online- plus I know where they are if it goes wrong!
  • I took my daughter to C*****s girly tat shop to choose a treat. She found a keychain she liked but the little animal had lost one googli eye.
'Ask if you can have it half price',I joked...result,they sold it to her for 50p!
She was thrilled with her first haggle.
Get 'em young and train them!
  • I bought a £699 LCD TV from Comet this year, it was already a manager's special with £200 off, but I asked if they could do anything with the price as I had seen the same model on line at £575. They said they couldn't match online prices, so I said I could also get it cheaper in Currys. I ssaid I would prefer to but from a local supplier but only if the price was similar. The salesman had to go to the manager to get a better price and I got it for £620, another 11% off.
  • i am so sick that I didn't haggle with DFS over £1600 worth of sofa, especially as we paid £600 in cash. Need new kitchen cupboard doors and new living room carpet. I'd better get practising on my haggling skills.

I recently haggled with Comet when buying a computer, monitor and 37" lcd tv from them. When I first went in the tv was £104 cheaper online than in store. The agreed immediately that they would match their internet price, and once I mentioned that I would take out a 5 year warranty, they agreed another £75 off. I then went home and ordered Comet vouchers from the Virgin Credit Card members shop with a 13% discount. By the time I went back into Comet nearly a week later, the internet price had dropped and was now £144 cheaper. They agreed to still match the internet price and still give me the £75 off (although he did consider recalculating the £75 amount as it was based on the original internet price of the tv, but in the end decided to let it go). In the end I got items costing £1,330 instore for £957 so was quite pleased with that.

Now I just had to cancel the warranty within 45 days. I emailed Comet online to see how to cancel and they said that I had to cancel instore before 45 days, or if after they gave me the address and phone number of the company who run the warranty. However I telephoned this company before the 45 days were up; they told me to send them the warranty insurance certificate (which I did by recorded delivery just in case) and that was that. No hassling me to keep the warranty which I was half-expecting. Cheque arrived by way of refund within a week of me posting off the insurance certificate.

    Hello

thinking of buying a tv from comet and just want some clarification on what you did. When they refunded the cost of the warranty did this mean you got another £75 of the cost of the TV (through a refund of the warranty at normal price) or did they refund the warranty minus the £75.

    cheers

I got £10 off a £30 pair of Nikes (that were onsale) at offspring shoe store on sat afternoon. I tried the pair on, looked at them sadly, mumbled something about not having enough money and the guy said "i can do them for £25 if you want". Remembering something i had seen on tv, i told him i only had £20 in my wallet and i would buy them there and then if he gave them to me for this price and after asking his supervisor, he agreed.

i was well chuffed and am going to try and do it more often.
  • Hi,

I was about to order a Dell online using Quidco cashback service, but then I came across your tip, and it saved me £30. I tried to haggle further, but without much success, but he did thrown in a free mouse.

So I can recommend your advice - do not order online, order by phone and haggle. Make sure the computer you are buying is the same one or better than the one you saw online. It helps to haggle if you have you can find another computer of similar spec at another supplier.

Don't buy your Dell via their website as you can't haggle. Always ring them up. I knew the spec of the laptop I wanted and it cost £1060. The sales staff representative in India was very friendly and we laughed about a few things (a good tip when haggling is to get the sales staff happy and they are usually more likely to be nice to you!). I got him down to £1000.99p I said that was a real shame as I wanted to break the pschological £1000 barrier. He said he would look into it more. After a few minutes he came back and said the system would not allow him to bring the price down anymore so I said again that was a real shame. Eventually, he gave me a laptop bag, worth £40. So, in the end I saved almost 10%. If I had simply bought it from their website I wouldn't have saved any money and I wouldn't have had a laptop bag to keep it in!

    in Massey's they were 2.79 a can.
i asked what deal i would get if i bought 12. the reply was £22. i said in Argos they do them for £15. OK i do them for £14.00 this ended cheaper than Argos and nearly £14 CHEAPER IF I HAD NOT ASKED FOR A DISCOUNT.
