The Great 'Shops You Can Haggle In' Hunt

I recently haggled with Comet when buying a computer, monitor and 37" lcd tv from them. When I first went in the tv was £104 cheaper online than in store. The agreed immediately that they would match their internet price, and once I mentioned that I would take out a 5 year warranty, they agreed another £75 off. I then went home and ordered Comet vouchers from the Virgin Credit Card members shop with a 13% discount. By the time I went back into Comet nearly a week later, the internet price had dropped and was now £144 cheaper. They agreed to still match the internet price and still give me the £75 off (although he did consider recalculating the £75 amount as it was based on the original internet price of the tv, but in the end decided to let it go). In the end I got items costing £1,330 instore for £957 so was quite pleased with that.
Now I just had to cancel the warranty within 45 days. I emailed Comet online to see how to cancel and they said that I had to cancel instore before 45 days, or if after they gave me the address and phone number of the company who run the warranty. However I telephoned this company before the 45 days were up; they told me to send them the warranty insurance certificate (which I did by recorded delivery just in case) and that was that. No hassling me to keep the warranty which I was half-expecting. Cheque arrived by way of refund within a week of me posting off the insurance certificate.

COMETS. Well known that ask for the extended warranty they will offer discount. Got a Sony 50" LCD for £1000. Got home and cancelled the £250 warranty for a refund. Result the TV cost £750, bargain.

A few years ago John Lewis had non-geographic pricematch signs prominently displayed; not sure whether they still do.
They had a stove for 700+. The identical stove was advertised on a slightly dodgy looking internet site, which charged a fair whack for delivery on top, at about 500. I had to provide Lewis' with the url of the internet deal. Once they checked it, Lewis agreed to price match the 500 and deliver for free, in accordance with their signs, but they said they were losing money on the deal. Thank you JL.
As a former John Lewis employee they don't generally do undersales/pricematching on internet website, They only pricematch physical stores.

I always have a go....For an expensive or large item I always check on a price comparison site first, ie kelkoo, etc and then go armed with the info...
I recently bought a dishwasher and fridge from Curry's, asked them if they'd meet the internet price...certainly madam!, saved a massive £51 on the fridge (couldn't have found it any cheaper) and £40 pounds on dishwasher (could have got that £5 cheaper on the net but too much hassle if any problems).
A lot of people don't realise that many stores will meet net price, so my philosophy is "if you don't ask you don't get"...needless to say if my husband is with me he disappears else he'd die of embarrasment!!
Mind you he's improving, he had to buy a new lawnmower so I told him to ask for discount, he didn't get it but he had taken the hedgecutter to be sharpened and they didn't charge for that (saved £7), better than nothing!0
