" Works both with server based maps and maps stored on your phone". This means that it will work without data connection if you preload all the maps you need.

That said, if you unlock the phone, mobile Internet is reportedly pretty cheap on a local PAYG in USA.

Well said, grumbler. If it's unlocked or you can get a basic unlocked smartphone, you can get data from one of the USA carriers for dirt cheap. OTOH, there is a lot of free WiFi in the US, so it really depends on your needs.

Thanks, for the prompt & helpful responses.
Im considering going down the "unlock & getting another temporary sim whist abroad" & therefore with this in mind can anyone advise :
    - the cheapest & most expedient way of getting my phone unlocked
    - a cheap sim deal (pay as you go ??) that will give me reasonable call & data coverage for approx 3 weeks.

    Thanks again.

Check out tmobile's pay by the day plans. AT&T and the other carriers have some plans as well. Just walk into any of walmartk kmart, radioshack, etc. or a tmobile store and get a sim. . sim+phone combinations are also available for dirt cheap.

Having returned from Florida, ther were NO data PAYG packages available. AT&T are looking at introducing one, but it isn't available. Also without a Social Security Number or US issued credit card SIM cards (even on PAYG) will be a problem.
