Yes it is OK to run the laptop with no battery in it.
If it's the battery that's getting warm then it's probably not the fand being clogged up.
Beware of cheap imported batteries - we bought one a while back for a Dell, and it wasn't very good.
yes thats what i am wary of. the original battery i assume was made in china, but so many different batteries on the internet i wouldnt know which ones are safe and which are not.
only battery i would feel safe buying is from hp, but at £93 wont be doing that for a laptop that is 18month old and well used.
i have been running it without battery for several days without any problems.
the first time i ran without the battery the laptop wouldnt boot up it was saying system repair hence my question on here.
thanks everyone for your advice it is much appreciated

Battery getting warm underneath increases temp, especially if on your "lap" = fan kicks in. A melamine tray or similar is better to use underneath rather than lap.
thanks anubis. the laptop has only ever been used on a table or desktop.

Very very good point since such batteries can cause fires. The problem is too that on places like ebay it can be very difficult to tell.
