have trawled the internet and read conflicting advice so can anyone please advise if its safe to remove battery from a hp g72 laptop and power from the mains or will i damage the laptop.
the laptop is approaching 18 month and needs the battery replacing, battery is only lasting around 15 mins have tried calibrating but wont do it.
as i only use the laptop at home now i am not going to pay hp £93 for a new battery!!!

i use a laptop at work with a duff battery,i wouldnt try running with the battery out though i just leave it in ,i see it as a case of taking a bit of load off the charger

thanks, reason i have taken it out it was because the battery was getting a bit warm seemed to be making the fan run overtime and sometimes the laptop would cut out because of overheating.
the bios has been updated but was making no difference

Laptop overheating is a sign of a clogged fan or vent.
How do I add a signature?

laptop is only ever used on desk, have checked the vents and blasted them out but doesnt seem to be any dust around them. the fan seems a lot quieter since i have taken the battery out but maybe coincidence then.
it hasnt overheated since i have taken battery out, do you think the heat off the battery could have caused it or should i maybe put the battery back in if it doesnt make a difference either way

The only difference a battery should make to the running is if you have a mains blip it won't kick in automatically (so like a desktop). Keeping a knackered battery in means the power supply keeps trying to charge it, so yes, heat is a likely by-product

I have an old and nasty Advent laptop which will only work properly if the battery is taken out! With it in, it will power-off after some tens of minutes, even though it will never hold any charge.

Indeed you are :) The charger is working at it's hardest when running the machine and recharging the battery at the same time. I presume the charger is getting too hot, in which case it would be better to only charge when the machine is off, and remove battery when running on mains.

Battery getting warm underneath increases temp, especially if on your "lap" = fan kicks in. A melamine tray or similar is better to use underneath rather than lap.

Yes it is OK to run the laptop with no battery in it.
If it's the battery that's getting warm then it's probably not the fand being clogged up.
Beware of cheap imported batteries - we bought one a while back for a Dell, and it wasn't very good.
