It would not even cross my mind to use a card for such a small amount.
Small? £1.70 for a drink that I bet was the cheapest!
Such outlets need to get with the times and accept alternative payments, because more people are expecting to use their cards these days - hence the introduction of contact-less cards.0 -
where I work we have no minimum transaction value and I have served customers with 16p box of tablets and he paid with a credit card0

I must admit that I usually pay with my card for everything and I am aware that many places do not process card payments under a fiver. I simply don't go in them. It would be annoying if I was in that situation. However they are not the only ones with that rule. Even if they had a sign up, likely it would be at the till and you wouldn't see it until it was too late anyway.I have had many Light Bulb Moments. The trouble is someone keeps turning the bulb off

I always spend on a debit card and never carry cash - means I can check on my bank statements and see where my money is going rather than just seeing a list of atm withdrawals which tell me nothing.0

I always expect places to have a minimum five pound for a card purchase as so many do.Hardly any have signs up,it's just the way it's been so is expected by many (or so I thought).I do ask certain places but wouldn't expect it.If women are birds and freedom is flight are trapped women Dodos?0

Lots of places have minimum transaction values, lots of places don't take cards so why is it so difficult for folk not to carry some cash with them?
There are plenty of places where it is free to take cash out so really, what is the problem?
To the OP, sorry, stop being so precious and think of the other person/business and the costs to them of complying with your wishes (well actually the costs to all their customers of them putting all prices up to do away with a minimum spend limit!!)
And hey, for small purchases it is so much quicker to pay by cash which helps you and everyone else who has better things to do with their time while a card transaction is dealt with!!0 -

Seems a bit queer. Your company is making a loss on that transaction. In fact they'd lose less by just giving him the 16p box of tablets.
I don't carry much cash, but I wouldn't go out without any. I think it's a bit outrageous to expect to pay for something really cheap with a card.
OP, I'd be annoyed too if there was no sign. I wouldn't be annoyed for long enough to write a letter over it though. Maybe an email to their customer services dept. if I didn't have much else to do that day.Love the animals: God has given them the rudiments of thought and joy untroubled. Thinking laterally for a moment, if 'free banking' goes by the wayside and they start charging by usage I wonder if people will think again about the desirability of the 'cashless society'?The questions that get the best answers are the questions that give most detail....0

It depends on the agreement that the shop has with the transacting bank. Some shops are charged per transaction, some are not.0
