I too am a pensioner - certainly not rich but not poor either, but I do pay tax and have been affected by this freeze. I have to wonder though why this allowance wasn't given to everybody when it started. After all, who on earth can possibly believe that it is right for someone on minimum wage to be paying tax. So to put it another way, I am content to have this freeze on my personal allowance and just hope that everyone else catches up in the shortest possible time-frame. Perhaps I feel this way because I am not a "Granny"!!

You feel that way, because you can see it is fair and you are a reasoned/reasonable person.

It hopefully won't be too long before I retire, so I might have been better off in retirement with the age weighted allowance. but it isn't fair, so I support the new allowance for all.

Maybe it will help with the Them vs US thing I see Everywhere now.

Between the richest and the poorer, those on benefits vs taxpayers, those retired now vs those who have to wait longer, Public sector workers striking over their still decent pensions vs private sector workers who dream of such pensions.

In 2013 to 2014 Tax year that allowance is FROZEN so will not go up.

You previously said it was frozen FOREVER. Now you seem to be acknowledging that it's just for a couple of years. We seem to be making slow progress.

    Phew!

I am ready for a debate just with you.

    I am honoured.
I will do this just for you as I have neither the time or inclination to spend all day and night arguing with people here I would cross over the other side of the street to avoid.
If you just want people to agree with you, you're in the wrong forum.

Perhaps try the Saga forums. Oops sorry - they didn't all agree with you either, did they?
In effect, penalized because we worked all our lives.
You don't appear to have saved that much though.
In 2013 to 2014 Tax year that allowance is FROZEN so will not go up.
For a maximum of 2 years. At that point the personal allowance for everyone will have caught up and then it will rise for everyone.
For arguments sake, say I get next years pay rises in Pensions and let us also say that the increase is £8 a week. I will now pay around £1.40 a week Tax on that which I would NOT have paid had Osborne done his dastardly deed. (The effect for most tax paying Pensioners is £83 a year).
So in real terms you are complaining that you have to only have an increase of 3.3% on your pensions as opposed to 4%.

Whereas this year and last year, I have had no increase in wages and an extra 1.2% increase in my pension contributions this year so I'm 1.2% worse off not even taking inflation into account. I'd have loved to have had an increase of 3.3%.
In effect this means that EVERY Pension rise I get in the future will be taxed at 20%.
Not necessarily. By 2015 the personal allowances will be equalised and you may well soon find yourself not paying tax again.
I do hope that you are not wiping your eyes with the tissues Love?
    Only from laughter I'm afraid.
New Pensioners next year will be hit even harder as the Allowance goes DOWN to £9,205 which means £325 extra tax a year (and rising) they would not otherwise have paid.
As they never had the increased allowance, it cannot go down. In fact it will go up from £8105.
This Tax Raid of Osborne is meant to bring in around 3 BILLION pounds into the Treasury. Taken from Pensioners just like me.
Did you complain when the over 65/75 allowance was increased by more than the increase for under 65? It happened quite a lot. Surely that's unfair?

Tax allowances should be the same for everyone, no matter what age they are. Pensioners already pay less tax than those who are working as they pay no NI.

Pity there isn't a tax on stupidity... these forums alone could pay off the UK national debt in no time!

Around 1925 Winston Churchill recognised that pensioners often live on small fixed incomes and need a little extra cash help, and so introduced the higher pension allowance. After 87 years of pensioners having this elderly allowance, this rich cocooned Government of Cameron and his chums have taken away this financial support. Shame on them.

Others have a chance to earn more. Most Pensioners do not.:)
You've heard the budget speech now you've been told. Make lots of cash then die before you're old 'Cause we're gonna Tax Gran that's what it is We're gonna Tax Gran freeze her allowances. You better hope next winter isn't cold. We're gonna Tax Gran, we're glad she's there. To subsidize the Billionaires. We're gonna Tax Gran and this is wrong!

Could not agree more with you, but you must remember this country does not care for elderly poor pensioners if they are not millionaires.

I know of lots of pensioners that work part time to help towards their low state pensions and they still pay a lot of tax on an income of less than £14k.

I note on the news this morning that they are asking pensioners to moved out of their house to free up housing stock this may free up a couple of bedroom. As we all know the queen has hundreds of bedrooms and a pensioners as well also properties is state subsidized so why is everyone taking it out on the poorest pensioners.

George Osborne has done a partial U turn over the Pasty Tax, the Caravan Tax and the Charity Tax amongst over 30 others. He MUST now do another U-turn in respect of the hated 'Granny Tax'.

Because George Osborne 'FROZE' the Elderly Tax Allowance at £10,500 forever in his recent budget, present tax paying pensioners will be around £83 a year out of pocket from April 2013.

New tax paying pensioners in particular will have anything up to around £325 less yearly income as the allowance for them goes down to £9,205. At the same time the higher tax rate goes down from 50p to 45p, meaning the super rich get around a £40,000 a year tax boost. A sort of Robin Hood in reverse if you like!

I have a website on this subject which has no advertisements and is funded by me. If you wish to have a look it is granny tax rebels .org (all one word of course).

I have given no direct link and hope that this will not break any forum rules. I have sent the moderator team 3 e. mails asking advice on this with not even the courtesy of a reply.

Here are a couple of You Tube Videos which you may or may not find amusing though...

    The Tax Gran song...

    THE TAX GRAN SONG

You've heard the budget speech now you've been told

Make lots of cash then die before you're old
'Cause we're gonna Tax Gran that's what it is
We're gonna Tax Gran freeze her allowances
You better hope next winter isn't cold

The 50p top rate of tax is now gone
We'll get what we need from Grandma from now on
We're gonna Tax Gran, we're glad she's there
    To subsidize the Billionaires
    We're gonna Tax Gran
Even the Sun said this is wrong

I must admit even I did not fully realise how quickly this shambles of a government would crash and burn. That budget must have been the most incompetent piece of legislation I've ever seen. I've been told that 40% of pensioners will lose on average about £83 a year from the freezing of allowances. Ultimately the equalisation of allowances is fairer but then the pasty faced Osborne decides that those earning 150K or above will see their tax rate go from 50% to 45%......:rotfl:

And then back down to 40% where it was before Labour increased it TEMPORARILY.

It didn't work at 50%, it won't work much better at 45%, and even 40% is a compromise.
