I am so thrilled that you approved that has made my evening; I would have been so worried if you were UPSET. not:rotfl::rotfl:....
Just to let you know that lots of single pensioners work hard and still working hard to survive and we do not want a supercilious poster like margaretclare telling us how to spend our pensions and to be more frugal with the pittance we get.
BTW you do not know what my health is like and I have no intention of telling everyone on an open forum what it is to get sympathy like another poster that we all know of on here. :T:T
Perhaps if you and Booze crusier (and it is all there in his name) took advice from sensible margaret and her ilk and were more frugal you would have a better retirement?
If you get a pittance it only means you didn't save enough. Period.0 -
Atush, please edit your post to remove the part that looks unpleasantly like a personal attack. Rather than replying in kind, a report to the MSE Forum Team is an effective alternative and produces a much more civil and useful discussion of an important topic like this one. This isn't just intended for you, everyone can get reported for personal attacks and I much prefer editing before the Forum Team gets a report, makes for more happiness for all.0

I think I am going to land up repeating myself here. 1. I am a pensioner. 2. I pay tax. 3. I am affected by the freeze to the over 65 personal allowance.
I am single, made provision for myself, and I still voted NO. Not only that I believe that everyone should have at least that amount as a personal allowance. It is equivalent to minimum wage. No-one earning minimum wage should be paying tax and also nothing more than a nominal amount of NI. The state pension has increased by more than most people in employment's salary. I think it time people should just let this go & move on to something more helpful.0 -
Most on this particular forum thread are obviously against me. However, I think that the general public are.
http://www.telegraph.co.uk/finance/budget/9164736/Budget-2012-Granny-tax-poll-blow-for-George-Osborne.html
Mr Osborne was criticised last week for leaving the "granny tax" as a "nasty surprise" on Budget day, with most of the other measures already in the public domain.
The tax will leave up to five million middle-class pensioners up to £323 worse off, according to the Institute for Fiscal Studies.
Asked whether they support the move overall, 63 per cent of voters disagree – with the figure rising to 64 per cent among pensioners – while less than a quarter of voters (22 per cent) support it.
Tory supporters oppose it by the narrow margin of two per cent, however, with the margin among Labour and Lib Dem voters much wider.
It has also emerged that Lady Bakewell, the Labour peer and TV presenter, is to spearhead an “e-petition” to the Downing Street website calling on ministers to reconsider their “granny tax” plans.
If the petition reaches 100,000 signatures it becomes eligible for debate in the Commons.
“It is fundamentally unfair that the Government is raiding pensioners’ allowances at the same time as cutting tax for the richest one per cent,” she said. You've heard the budget speech now you've been told. Make lots of cash then die before you're old 'Cause we're gonna Tax Gran that's what it is We're gonna Tax Gran freeze her allowances. You better hope next winter isn't cold. Well I still say keep mine fixed and get everyone elses up there too and still say nobody on minimum wage should be paying tax, to me there is no difference between a pensioner on the equivalent of minimum wage and someone younger actually on minimum wage (and I'm going to shout now) THEY SHOULD NOT BE PAYING ANY TAX AT ALL. Then we can all go onward and upward.0

JAMES, I am not interested in any interpretations you have of my posts. I mentionned no names, and Numpty is a kind term.
I felt an attack was made, why did you not reply in kind to the attacker?
Margaret is a kind, hard working pensioner. Please send your comments to her attacker.0 -
Wrong again, you're getting tiresome now. I work, for what it's worth, in a private sector third party administration environment (google it, because I no longer have the patience to pander to your ignorance) catering to private sector pension trustees.
My age is irrelevant, I know what I'm talking about, you don't, and to be frank, you're simply spouting either tabloid or Labour party tripe.
And, by the way, it's "no doubt", not "know doubt", that plus random capitalisation of words that do not require same suggests tabloid of the red top kind.
If you want to come on here and insult people, be aware that they are quite capable of replying in kind, just with better spelling.
First, I have no intention to insult anyone.
Second, your points in respect of spelling and random capital use are fair constructive criticism and I will keep your comments in mind. Corrections done in that particular post, I think!
Third, your age however is relevant. If you are nowhere near a Pensioners age, how can you know how the freezing of the elderly tax allowance will effect any particular individual? With respect, you are not wearing the same shoes as me for instance, and so cannot have any idea how the Tory's actions effect one.:cool:You've heard the budget speech now you've been told. Yes, and that is very good advice for all of us.:)You've heard the budget speech now you've been told. You are entitled to your opinion and I respect that. However we are going to have to beg to differ in respect of the freezing of the elderly tax allowance.
I agree with you however that anyone on low pay should not pay tax as well. And that includes ANYONE on low pay like £10,500 a year for instance.
The differential with the elderly tax allowance should be kept though as right now.:DYou've heard the budget speech now you've been told. It is my belief that they only gave that allowance because of the mess HMRC were in at the time & the messes they were making with people with several income streams (as pensioners tend to be) so they lifted a lot of them out of paying tax without any joined up thinking. This has left a lot of pensioners on more than the personal allowance being stuck having to do self assessment every year. And heaven help all of us when dementia sets in and we are still having to file self assessment on line because it won't be long before they refuse to accept postal forms. That is why they are now getting rid of it. Nothing to do with taxing Gran more - just trying to sort out another governmental screw up0
