I read a book called Animal Farm at school and it's proved more accurate than I'd like in many areas, but mainly anything where people start out to do good and become part of that system they used to fight, turning their backs on those who helped them get where they are in the process.

This site is NOTHING without users, ads that don't get seen or clicked on are worthless. A forum like this is useful only when there is content to draw people to it, and advice from people with the knowledge to give it.

The forum staff gibe no real % of the advice on here, if you had a problem with your life in almost any area from serious debt to painting your house..the users would be here to help and advise not Martin.

I don't come here for a few quid off bills or the odd cheap deal. There's much more to MSE than that. It's not even just a community, it's a group of different communities all focused on different areas.

I'm going nowhere, Not until things change.

IF things change to a point that many of us can't handle it anymore it's no big deal...what exists here is a large group of people that can easily move house to another forum ...this isn't even the best forum system and they are simple to set up to stand by the old principles we all know and like.

The forum is the people, not the admin or script.
No-one can change the people but us. ;)

I'll be interested to see what happens when someone had a problem related to the new owners. That will be an acid test.

It is a big deal, it's done so well because it had Martin as the figurehead, he's stepped in as the ultimate decider on lots of occasions on threads.

He's been a high profile do gooder, who has constantly bought in new blood to renew the usual forum loses.

No matter how much money he's made from it, I believe without him the forum will slowly die. Whether MS realise this or not, I don't know, they must have an idea, so must have something up their sleeve to try to continue the forum in it's present state.

Don't worry about it, I'm not.

I feel a bit like when hugh fearnley whittingstall went all corporate and started making big bucks from all kinds of things. Felt a bit dirty and used, but was told it's just money, was always a money making business and why was I getting upset.
I think it's because I believed in that person.

I joined in 2004 with one of my old names.

I knew it was a bit of taking idea off the posters, when a MSE employee asked about a particular subject in a new thread, then my ideas went into a book by Martin. My words exactly.
Was I ever thanked for my thoughts, no, not once by anyone from MSE on the thread or off it.

    <sigh>

Now, imagine you develop a couple of web tools that could save shoppers money, you spend a few years building that up, promoting it, getting the name out there, when all of a sudden a well-known journalist pops up with the same idea, and claims it his own, and tells his 7m newsletter subscribers to try it out.

How many people think this is ethical?

    Oh no!

What has Martin done - I read this in the paper yesterday, realised instantly it was a big mistake, he's ruined this site now specially selling to MoneySuperMarket *cringe*

I can see spam levels going up, junk emails rolling in, possibly membership fees later down the line, more trolls than ever, less morals, not such great advice and more money making scams for the site itself than the consumer.

I doubt I'll be posting here much anymore.....

Goodbye and RIP MSE for being so great long as you have

    When did that happen?

I think the site is more than ML these days and people will therefore continue to use it. I think people saw ML for what he was a long time ago - Icelandic bank accounts, tuition fees, news of the world, etc etc and they have still decided to keep posting.....I think he could leave now and it would actually make no difference...well imho.

All the best ideas are stolen....look at the number of claims against Mark Zuckerberg and FB.
