I would love to join in as well. I followed the thread in Jan but didn't post.
I'm going to try for £100. That's for myself, the OH, 3 dogs, one cat.
I still have oodles in the freezer but the store cupboards are going down. What's the best idea if I manage to empty a freezer - do I turn it off or fill it full of water in bottles. I'm a bit scared of turning it off as one of them is almost 10yrs old (I have 3 freezers mainly for the fruit and veg I grow). Will do a sig now I've found out where it is.
Hi MSHAWX. If you do this right your freezer will never be totally empty. If you cook in batches after you shop all your meals ect will be at hand, this in turn helps you avoid buying more expensive fast food when you dont feel like cooking. You might find that if you manage to get a bargain, whoopsies, special offers ect, you will able to store these things and make some long term savings. These stand you in good stead in the leaner months too. Just reread your post... 3 freezers might be using a bit more energy than is good for your purse. Can you sell your veg when in season? Or barter it, thereby getting something you want or need and saving money on storage. It,s something to think about. ;)

  • I am thinking of investing in a chest freezer so that I can batch cook more and take advantage of special offers on bakery items. My mum get bread and cakes in asda for as little as 6p each at the end of day and I unfortunately just don,t have room to take advantage of deals like that.
I have 3 freezer drawers just now which I don,t think is enough. What does everyone think? Is a chest freezer a good investment and will it help me save on my food bills in the long run?

Don't forget this February is a LEAP YEAR so that's one extra days food to your usual February!
Still it's two days shorter than normal so let's be brave and drop that equivalent off the budget, so that's £25 off the budget so £365 for February :)

I was thinking of getting a chest freezer too, but I rarely empty the one I have and things can lie in there for ages as it is. (three drawer) In the end I dont think it,s worth it I would just hoard stuff. If someone was giving a decent one away I would probably nab it.

    Afternoon all

have just spent another €26.95 about £20  ....but as i got some super duper bargains i will let myself off ;) and not all wil get used this month :D

    I got:-

    2 free range chickens @ €2.30
3 packs free range turkey mince @ €1.56
a 600g pack raw free range turkey steak @ €2.92
2 packs of pork medalions in peppercorn sauce @ 1.50
    2 packs of cevpacici @ €1.00
3 fresh WW pizzas -salami, pepper and onions -much nicer than the UK ones for some reason:confused: ..i normally make my own -but they will be kept for "emergancies" :rotfl:
and 4 packs of butter -they are on offer so it would be rude not to get a supply as we only use butter :p

So im really happy with that little lot as all the "whoopsies" were less than half price :T ...i also made note that loads of the meat in the chillers was dated the 31st -so i may well be popping back on thursday ;) ......

It looks like a lot of this months budget may be taken up taking advantage of whoopsies and offers that will eventually save me money in further months :D ..
i have spotted that 7.5kg sacks of potatoes are going on offer at just €1.79 tomorrow -about 15p per kilo :T -so i may get a couple of extras to put in the basement, and really good quality loo rolls are 24 for less than €6...and even though i don't "need" any this month.. they may end up in my store;)

right, i have updated my spreadsheet..so just need to add to my signature now..
    have a great day everyone:D

    Hi you lovely lot:D

I'm in again, I came in well under budget in January, but I did have a head start with Christmas left overs. I am setting myeslef a budget of £250.00 this month, for two adults and two children. I hope I can do it again, I feel a bit more nervous about doing it this month as I haven't got the head start I had in Jan:rolleyes:

Best of luck everyone, hope you all do well.

  • Afternoon all

I have been to the market and got my fruit for the week. Rather shamefully i have no idea if it was cheaper than Tesco or not as i haven't until recently taken much notice of what i spend! I spent £3.25 and got 6 clementines, 5 bananas and 3 apples.

Will be doing my weeks shopping tonight at the supermarket but have menu planned (as much as you can when you don't cook) and have a list which i am adament i will stick to.
    Feb GC £80/£120 :(

    March Grocery Challenge £100
    Spent so far £64.15
    Remaining £35.85
  • Hiya,

I'm still working on the January challenge, haven't added it up yet but I know I'm over. I'm going to go for £350 again this month.

My aim for this month is to eat better by trying to meal plan and be more organised with my baking. Oh, and to try and hit my GC budget of course!;)

Put me down for £350 again please!

    Thank you x

Just called in at Mr T as had been into town to transfer mortgage money. Put a weekly amount into a savings account then move it the day before mortgage due.

Tesco had haggis on promotion from £1.38 to £0.98 ending today(burn's night special) anyway true to form there weren't any left; however the assistant I spoke to told me to go to CS and ask for a "Promotion Promise Voucher", I picked up the other bits I needed, mainly flour for baking, Utterly Butterly 500g promotion 61p and headed off.

At CS asked for this voucher and was asked how many I wanted it for and it is now good for whenever I'm next in and they have sufficient stock for me to purchase.

Safeway used to do this, but I didn't know that Tesco did will ask next time I'm in Sainsburys as well.

I had planned on buying at least 6 as we use 2 of these per meal, and that would see us thru to the warmer weather (she hopes).

SOOOOOO basically if any of the supermarkets have a promotion and no stock ask for a Promotion Promise Voucher, then you still get the savings even after the promotion is ended.
    My self & hubby; 2 sons (30 & 26). Hubby also a found daughter (37).
