yep, but what I'm saying is that some (lots) of the A series engines were fitted with simplex chains as were lots of other cars from the era Mikey is talking about.

    fair enough
    but
    they were oiled by lash
    and only kicked out 35bhp
    :D

Still turns round just as often as a new one does.

Probably not. The modern ones will be higher revving.

going OT but I suppose back in those days the cam chain was only opening 8 valves with soft valve springs, gentle cam profiles and low rev limits but even so it was pretty much unheard of for an engine to get to 100k mile. The freer revving cooper s variants with more aggressive cams & springs had duplex from day one.

A series was very high revving, so is the Renault I still have, but then again I don't always run at 6500rpm, normally they're about 2 to 4000 rpm, same as the modern ones I have. I doubt most people red line engines continuously. True about valves and cams, but a rubber belt runs my twin cam ok.

Assuming your car has the PSA/BMW 1.6 THP engine this is a known issue with the 207's as well. The problem is the tensioner that was originally fitted was not good enough casuing the timing to slip. I have had mine replaced and so far i have not had any problems but I am reading that even the new RCZ's and Citroen DS3's are still having problems so it has still not been rectified.
If you do have it replaced make sure they use the upgraded parts.
If you do a google for 1.6 thp timing it will being back 100's of results.
Some people have been luckier than others with the parts replaced under warranty as BMW are well aware of this issue.
