item not working, help needed.

Hi,
We purchased a used laptop for our daughter, the auction stated that it was working.

Received the laptop today, it switches on but freezes at start up, so we now need to arrange a refund and return of item to the seller.
We just need advice on how to return the item, and do we ask for a refund of both postage costs? Any help would be great. Thanks.

You need to be asking the seller about this really. If they're slow to respond by email, (I'm talking several days, not hours) pull their details and call them.

Make sure you send it back via a trackable method, with ample insurance. If you approach your seller pleasantly, they may pay your return postage, but they're not obliged to do so.

If they are unhelpful, come back here as vee haf vays of making them cooperate.

Depending on weight it might be worth looking at one of the many "less than £5 for anywhere in the UK" parcel companies in the uk.

What exactly happens when you try to boot it up? As in at what point does it freeze at start up?
I take it you have checked that the laptop doesn't have a floppy in the floppy drive or a CD in the CD drive? (It could cause problems....)
Are you able to boot it up into safemode? (Depending on model it's usually F8 when you try to boot up...)

my laptop does this sometimes and it is BRAND NEW only got it at christmas and sometimes I have to do a safe mode restart. try that out f8 at boot menu, if not then try a system restore. Then if you have a boot cd try that. failing all the above do a claim if he refuses to refund.

samantha a brand new laptop shouldn't be hanging on startup unless there is a serious driver or software conflict... Have you checked with the manufacturer to see if there is an updated BIOS you can try flashing it with to fix this problem?
