Harverys twintec water softener - not regenerating?

in Water bills
I have had a twintec water softener for just two years with no issues.
Last week I had a problem with my cold water tank in the loft not refilling after water drained leaving the tank empty, turned out to be the ball valve stuck, all gunked up so had just the valve replaced and all good again. All around the same time though my water softener has stopped regenerating itself.
It ticks away when water is running through it, but it is not using any salt and not regenerating. I have manually got it to regenerate so it can do it but not doing it all on it's own.
Called the installer, he can't come and take a look for a week and will charge me to service it.
I called Harveys, they did not have much clue to be honest on the phone.
Any ideas??

One of the perils of buying a twin cylinder softener I am afraid - they go wrong a lot more often !0

As the softener should be on the incoming mains supply I am not sure of the relevance of your cold water storage tank issues to this question unless it was something that the plumber who changed the fill valve did to your system in the process..

As above, it's pure coincidence-unless the softener has been installed entirely wrongly-in which case you are drinking the water from your storage tank!No free lunch, and no free laptop0

Just to update - Nice chap came and replaced the whole of the insides for me. He thought the counter had failed for some reason but would not know why till he took it back to his workshop and took it apart.
From a quick look though he could see that the filter had quite a few larger than normal sized particles trapped in it, so thought that might have something to do with it.
No charge to me either so that's a relief!0
