Thank you all so much for taking the time to reply.

Would a coffee shop like costa be ok? Or a pub lunch?

    I've been Money Tipped!
Why not see how she recieves you? Lunch gives you more time to get to know each other.

I think your son may have wanted his gran there because he KNOWS she can be difficult - and you know how to handle her?
I agree a small gift would be lovely - but, perhaps it could be for the baby? It isnt usual to give a gift on first meeting a sons g/f and she may be embarrassed if she hasnt got you anything? gift for baby is quite in order!
please try to relax - I am sure she is a lovely girl and you will get on like a house on fire.
one tip - it will embarrass your son no end if you take along HIS baby photos - but his g/f may love it and it will give you a common talking point!

A similar thing happened to me - one of my sons introduced his new girlfriend as 'Mum, Dad, this is 'name' and we are expecting a baby'!
then followed up with 'Her dad just chucked her out - can she stay here'!

of course it was cobbingstones! and of course she stayed! 8 years on they have their own home and added to the family and are getting married later this year!
and the grandkids are the light of our lives!
I wont say it was easy - it wasnt! but, it worked out in the end and I have a DIL who considers me a mum and her dad isnt invited to the wedding! petty of me to gloat I know - but he is missing out on really delightful granddaughters!
I really meant it to say that despite shocking news - good things can come of it. and its best to get the gf onside if you can!

At least you have had advance warning!

not sure I think its delightful! there were hard times and times when I wished the pair of them far far away!
but, when I look at my granddaughters - I cannot wish it any different as I love them so much!
I had to bite my tongue a lot - and remind myself that its THIER lives not mine. and just try to support them.
