School Uniform

Just a vent really. My 15 year old son attends a secondary school which has recently changed from polo shirts and trousers to the full blazer/ shirt/ tie setup.

The new uniform looks smart and I have no problem with it whatsoever. However..... It has recently been very very warm here and the school has announced that although the pupils are allowed to take their blazers off during lessons, they must be worn at all other times in school.

I personally feel this is ridiculous :mad::mad::mad:. The blazers are a thick lined material and are bound to be very warm, ecspecially in the recent weather. Basically it is the equivilent to wearing a light jacket!

I totally understand the school wants pupils to adhere to the uniform and look smart, however should this really be at the price of some kid fainting?

No one is disbuting the wearing of the blazers, but surely a little discretion could be taken into account.

  • This does seem bonkers. Have many parents complained to the school that you are aware of? I wonder what the teachers are wearing.

My eldest daughter's secondary school has the same rule and they have to ask for permission in exceptionally hot weather to take off their lined blazers in lessons. I must admit I didn't think anything about it as my school had the same rules (as did my husbands) , so just took it all that all schools had the same rules. I don't remember anyone fainting in my school days and I haven't heard of any fainting incidents in hot weather in my 15 year old daughter's school. uniform standards remain the same in all weather, in that ties have to be done up to the neck and long sleeved blouses or shirts, girls in woolen kilts with tights and shoes. They also have to wear full uniform including blazers on school buses.

Possibly if they've recently changed over then they don't want to relax the new blazer rules too often.

I think it's madness personally. A few of the schools I go into for work have the blazer/shirt/tie rule and the school that is the most flexible with the kids on hot days and between lessons is the one that has the kids who have the most pride in their uniforms.

I really dislike policy that sees kids keeping their blazers on in lessons. I don't like to work wearing my jacket and I don't see why the kids should be any different. It especially annoys me if the staff don't have the same strictness on their attire. It just makes the kids resentful.

I had to wear the same in all weathers at school not so very long ago...shirt, tie, jumper...It was fairly uncomfortable...but I, and every other pupil, survived the ordeal.

In my daughter's school the dress code for teachers is that apart from the P.E. dept they all have to wear suits (including jackets) in all weathers.

Not too sure on other parents complaining. I have actually tried to speak to his head of house today but have been told to call again tomorrow as he's out, so no doubt i'll find out then.

My son says that the teachers clothing has been quite varied, anything from light summer blouses to the older male teachers wearing suits .

We had this at my school (I left 8 years ago) and I believe it is still in place. I survived (as did my fellow pupils). There are many jobs where you are expected to stick to the dress code no matter what the weather (police, nurses, lawyers etc), so I don't see what is so terrible about starting the habit in teenage years.

ETA: Do agree that teachers should have the same rules though.
